OK, so I've had a cup of tea and a good lie down, then spent the last couple of days reading an organic gardening book I got for Xmas, so I'm feeling a bit less maudlin ;-)
One of the other books I got (er, bought for myself) for Xmas, was Lawns Into Lunch: Growing Food in the City by Jill Finnane (with photographs by Huni Bolligen). It's a really excellent read, very easy to pick up and put down (a great plus when you are constantly interrupted by kids). It's the short stories of 22 Australian urban organic gardeners, a great variety of people from kids to Uni students to retired grandparents and everyone in between. Each garden and gardener has a few pages devoted to them, lots of pics and colourful text boxes highlighting recipes, permaculture principles and tips. It's not a text book, but rather a nice adjunct to more formal studies or readings for a beginner like me. I find that sometimes permaculture readings can be a little overwhelming in the volume of information they contain, but I found this to be full of people who started small (in their urban backyard) and worked their way up to their current food production levels as their knowledge and experience grew. I really enjoyed it :-)
