I thought I would share the dog food recipe that I use for my two dogs. I adapted it from one I found on the Aussies Living Simply website :-)
1 kg pet mince (I use 3kg of pet-grade kangaroo mince as it is more economical to buy)
1 cup raw brown rice
1 cup raw pasta
1 cup barley or lentils (I use brown lentils)
2 cups chopped mixed vegetables (NEVER use onions or shallots)
2 cloves chopped garlic
1 spoonfull of vegemite
Mix all the ingredients in a large stockpot and cover with water. Simmer for 45 minutes or until the rice and pasta is cooked. Top up the pot with water and allow to cool. Freeze in portions.
Using the 3kg of mince and adjusting the rest of the ingredients accordingly, I make enough food for our two (medium and large) dogs for approximately two weeks. The recipe doesn't contain a source of calcium so isn't suitable for growing puppies, but our adult dogs are fine on it, and they get uncooked bones to chew on as well.
We've never fed them tinned food, which is cheaper than the refrigerated "sausage" type of food we had been buying, which is about $6 for a 1.5kg sausage, that lasts them for four nights. This recipe works out cheaper than the sausage (around $3.50 a kilo) but more expensive than the tinned food - but (I think) it's infinitely healthier and more natural than whats in the tinned food, and they love it! It's also a fabulous way to use up all those not-so-fresh-looking veggies in the back of the crisper, LOL!

Very nice but you can visit this blog
dog’s food recipes

that are not affordable in any other site
it is really amazing, they put new recipes everyday.
Thanks for the link to your website...
I'd still love to feed my pet with home made food. One reason is they are feeling healthy and other is I got fixed income and would like some recipes to try for my dogs. I suspect it would be more cost effective to stay on dog food, however these dogs are older strays who love people food. Thanks for your recipes.
My brother in law makes food for his dog that is mostly just boiled white rice and chicken. He buys cheap chicken cuts when they're on special, boils them in with the rice, then scrapes all the meat off the bones. The dog loves it.
Hi Julie, I too make my Beau(dog) his food, but I read somewhere that garlic was not good for dogs,I get my fresh veggies at the 99 cent store which works out great. Is it just onions and leeks that are harmful to dogs?
Hi Darren,
Anything homemade has to be a huge improvement on the rubbish & fillers they put into commercial food - erk!
Hi Anon,
A *small* amount of garlic is beneficial but too much is not, so be careful how much you add as you are right, onions and members of the onion family are all harmful to dogs.
Cheers, Julie
Hi :o)
This is similar to what I do for my poochies!
However after reading different literature and finding http://greenpet.com.au and using some of their products, I now no longer cook the meat- they get it raw mixed with a vegie and grain mix :o) Much quicker for me to make too lol. I also do the vegies raw, I just process them in the food processor to a pulp.
I am in the process of changing over from bought dog food to homemade dog food for our doggie Molly who has severe allergies. Can't get kangaroo meat here in Canada though.

I hunt a lot and save all the scraps for the dogs when we butcher the meat. There is always that slightly 'off' piece of meat that I used to wonder whether I should turn it into burger or not. Now I just throw it into the dog food pile. I freeze the scraps in plastic bags. Our burger (or your 'mince') is better and the dogs love life. bY the end of hunting season I usually have 20 to 30 pounds of frozen dog food. (I hunt A LOT - one year we wrapped up 1400 pound of meat). Patrick
Thank you for the recipe! Its on the stove right now and smells good enough to eat for ourselves! My dog is at standby mode waiting for this tasty morsel to be finished! I just need to ensure that the chooks dont get to it first as they are always near his dog bowl :)
