I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

A silver lining to every cloud

Well, the yoghurt experiment may not have worked yesterday, but it did make rather excellent cream cheese (quark) when I drained it overnight :-) Excuse the "rustic" look, a chef I am not! Tastes good though, that's the main thing.

This is the amount of whey that drained off - around 250ml - and the odd (I think) yellow colour of it. Great in baking though, gives the scones, pancakes and muffins I've made with it so far, a really lovely tang. I stick it in these little containers and freeze it for when it's required later.

On a different note, I am running out of the commercial dishwashing liquid I have, so I have been looking around for recipes for homemade alternatives. I found a lovely lavender-scented one this afternoon on the 'net which I will try, after I have purchased some liquid castile soap and vegetable glycerin from the health food shop this week. I will post the recipe and let you know what I think of it when I've made it :-)
