I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Birthday lunching...

It was my significant other's birthday today, so a celebration was in order - and what better place to dine out for a long, leisurely, child-free lunch, than at the best restaurant in town - Scratchley's On The Wharf. But wait, there's more - not only is it the best restaurant in town (in my estimation anyway), is the most environmentally friendly restaurant in town :-)

So we sat and sipped local Hunter wine, dined on their renowned local seafood and fresh fruit platter, and enjoyed the lovely breezes over the river through the large picture windows that make up the entire river-side of the restaurant and that fold up to the ceiling on lovely days such as today. How tough!

Postcript: Yes, I know, I ate seafood after I have talked before about it not being (generally) a sustainable industry. But like most things in life I have learned it's about balance: we don't eat seafood in general and we won't again probably until Christmas (and possibly not then), plus it was local seafood (so the food miles consisted of the few-hundred-metre trip from the local cop-op) and I have heard a lot of press in recent times about how the local industry is striving to harvest on a sustainable basis.

Yes, balance is the thing. Happy Birthday to your other half. I hope you both had a wonderful day, and don't give the seafood another thought.
