I was whinging about my elecricity use just the other day and today my quarterly bill turned up in the mail *sigh*. After all that clothes drying in the drier and using the air-con, it was $111 up on the last bill :-( My average use for the quarter was 27.7 kWh per day - what a shocker.
On the upside, I joined the ATA (Alternative Technology Association) yesterday. The membership includes a year's subscription to the ReNew magazine, which contains great articles on energy and water saving around the home. Another reason I joined is that I have heard that they will hire out the Power-Mate digital energy meter, which measures the energy used by your household appliances (it plugs in between the appliance and the powerpoint). It is expensive to buy (around $285) so not really in my budget at the moment, and besides, it's probably something I would only use intensively for the one home audit. I haven't had a reply to my inquiry yet, so I am hoping that they still hire them! It will hopefully help me to do an energy audit of my house and track down exactly where all my power use is coming from - so that I can do something proactive about it! If they no longer hire the meter I am considering having the Cent-a-meter installed - this meter is attached to your electricity supply and gives you a constant digital readout on your electricity use so you can see when you are *really* using up power, and conversely, when you aren't.
