I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Budget night last night

I wasn't expecting much for the environment from the federal government Budget announcments last night, and unfortunately I wasn't surprised. Costello is offering rebates of up to $8000 on home solar panels, but since a basic grid-connected system starts at around $15000, we still aren't in the position to come up with the rest of the $7000, and that's for a system that would supply around a third of our current daily needs. To be fair, it is a rebate as opposed to the loan of up to $10,000 the Labor party is offering, but it's only for solar systems: it doesn't include greywater systems or other appliances which is disappointing. Roll on election time...
