Since Monday I have been keeping a tally of the amount of plastic we have thrown in the bin this week. It's Wednesday, and I'm already appalled. The tally reads:
Prepaid post satchels x 2
Organic bananas x 2 (plastic wrap + foam trays)
Laminating school sight words, offcuts x 25
Mandarins x 1 netting bag
Cookies box liner x 1
Free range chicken thigh fillets x 4 (wrap + trays)
Organic watermelon x 1 plastic wrap
Organic rockmelon x 1 plastic wrap
Bread loaf bags x 4
Buns x 2 bags
Frozen peas x 1 bag
Water bottle x 1
Laminating pouches lining bag x 1
Milk bottles x 3
Butter container x 1
Wrapping on subscription gardening magazines x 2 (one biodegradeable)
Wrapping on numbers learning aid x 1
Some of these items are recyclable such as the water bottle, milk bottles and butter container, I could have refused to buy some other items encased in plastic, particularly the bananas (I was weakened by the persistant screams of "BANA'S!" from my 1 year old), and some items had been reused a few times such as the bread bags, but I'm still not happy with the total. And that's just plastic, not everything made from petrochemicals. It has certainly made me even more aware of (and disgusted by) just how ubiquitous the stuff is...

Hi - I have been obsessing about the non-recyclable plastic that comes into our house each week - and despite how hard I try, I still have 5-10 bits coming in each week - things we NEED! It really is insanely hard to be enviro friendly in this department - and it makes me admire the plastic free bloggers all the more!
