I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Preparation for Low Impact Week

I'm quite excited about this coming week, in as far as I am using it to further refine my existing measures to reduce our footprint, and hopefully, it will inspire my other half to pull his weight a bit more, LOL. So here's what I hope to achieve for Low Impact Week (which will include my birthday!):

  • Eat no meat meals (we currently eat meat about once a week), and
  • Eat four vegan main meals, plus
  • Cut out all other dairy during the day except for one cup of coffee (and it's winter here too!).
  • Cut my 4 minute showers to 2 minutes for this week (did I mention it's winter?).
  • Only use conserved water from the kitchen, shower or greywater on my fruit and vegetables.
  • Drive the car for only absolutely essential purposes (which will be made all the more easy by the fact that petrol is 143.9c/L tonight!). Hopefully that will mean only two short trips.
  • Insist on homemade or second hand birthday presents, with the exception of a worm farm ;-) (I suspect I will get cash from the in-laws and my parents so guess what I'll be buying myself, LOL? Made from recycled plastic of course ;-) ).
  • Buy nothing except food, and
  • Buy no processed foods, including bread (I will make my own), plus
  • Buy no item that includes plastic in any form.
  • Limit the use of the air-conditioning (heating) to 20 minutes of a morning to take the chill off the air when the kids get up (and before the sun comes in through the windows).

If I think of any more I'll list them tomorrow :-)
