I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Local Food Month at Crunchy Chicken

After the success of Low Impact Week, Crunchy Chicken's latest challenge is Local Food Month. Her challenge is:

During the month of July you're going to increase your consumption of locally and sustainably grown food and decrease your consumption of imported and packaged food. You choose the level of participation you want to do.

Her suggestions are:

Eat local:
produce (fruits and vegetables)
dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese)
meats and seafood
breads and grains

Limit:
pre-packaged food
frozen food
fast food

Make your own:
cereals
pastas
breads
soymilk
yogurt

I love this idea! It's something that I am already trying to practice in order to lower my family's footprint, but I don't devote as much time to looking at it in detail as I would like, and this will force me to do all the things I have *wanted* to do but haven't had time, like actually reading the labels on *all* of my groceries each week.

Where we stand at the moment:

Eat local:
Produce: I *think* about half of the organic fruit and veg I buy is local to the Hunter region, the rest is Aussie but I haven't checked where (yet).
Dairy: All Aussie, but mostly from Victoria as opposed to the local Hunter dairies
Meats and Seafood: We only eat chicken, it is 50% local Hunter and 50% Victorian
Breads and Grains: I don't know!

Limit:
Pre-packaged food: I am yet to work out the exact precentage of pre-packaged food that we eat, I estimate it's about 30%?
Frozen food: I only buy frozen (Aussie) peas. Frozen foods were one of the first thing I ditched on the road to sustainability.
Fast food: We eat takeaway about once or twice a month?

Make Your Own:
Cereals: About 50%; I make our own toasted muesli.
Pastas: Ooooh, this is something I'd love to try!
Breads: Yep, the breadmaker gets a workout already, but I only make about 30% of our bread.
Soymilk: We don't drink it at the moment, although I should!
Yoghurt: Tick! I make all our own yoghurt.

So there are obviously some areas I need to work on, I will be interested to see how my grocery purchases actually work out, distance wise.
