I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Low Impact Week: Transgressions...

What is that quote about "the best laid plans of mice and men"? *Sigh* I didn't have the most successful weekend as you might have noticed from the post title, LOL.

Fistly, Miss 5 blew a shoelace on Friday, and since I can't send her off to school today without school shoes, new ones were in order. Despite rescuing and hoarding every decent pair of shoelaces I could in the last few years, not one pair was black, so I had to buy some - the first transgression, buying something that wasn't food - and do you think it's possible to buy shoelaces not wrapped in plastic? NO! Hence the second transgression - the purchase of plastic. Damn! The weekend didn't improve much either, LOL.

Household repairs: screws in a plastic bag ( you can't buy them NOT in plastic bags anywhere any more, at least not around here, even the local independent hardware store.

Three unexpected trips in the car - two long ones - when I bought a chair second hand on eBay (for my birthday), and then had to drop the kids off at the in-laws (1 hour round trip) so we could pick it up (and then pick the kids back up again!).

And some others. Ah well, I'm trying!

Anyway, as an aside, the other day I found this groovy device you can install in the shower - the Every Drop Shower Saver - a "paddle" that switches your shower on and off without losing your settings while you shower. In other words, you can set your shower temperature and flow, get yourself all wet - switch if off while you lather up and wash your hair - and then switch it back on again to rinse off without having to reset the temperature! How cool is that? Acutally, "cool" is probably the operative word here in our frosty winter mornings, LOL, but still, it's a great concept, although not cheap (about AU$48 + p&h). I think you'd get your money back over a year (or less?) though, through water savings on your bill? I'm going to put one in my budget to save up for :-)

Happy Birthday! I think you did well anyway 'cause you had a raised awareness of your *every* impact. I think that's a wisdom in itself.

I hope the rest of the week goes well for you!
