Kids and Toys

The second birthday of my DD#3 heralded the beginning of "birthday season" at my place, the last family birthday being just before Christmas, so as you can imagine I am under great stress at this time of year even without attempting to do it more simply and sustainably this time around!

So if, like me, you have little kids and a house full of toys - mostly cheap and mostly plastic - you need to read this post by Sharon Astyk at Casaubon's Book.

Sharon puts my thoughts into words so much more eloquently than I ever could. Well worth a read.

Now I'm off to do Toy Purge #49, LOL.

Yes, I'm not looking forward to getting yet more toys for Billy's b'day. I need to put a toy purge on my list of things to do!

Hi,

I just put up a comment on Sharon's blog about our community market where the kids sell each other their toys! This way they know they're getting something new every month, they sort through and get rid of their own toys and gradually the pile of unused toys disappears.

Loved the link and it rang so true. My children are past the plastic junky toy stage, unless you classify electronic game cartridges in that grouping. At least they don't take up much space! Apart form the Lego and the board games most of our toys are now unused. Need to sort and despatch them, it is on my long term to-do list.

Thank you for the comment - I might try for some more greens after reading what you said and forget the carrots. I bought some more seeds the other day - cucumber, capsicum and full size tomato since they're the vegies we eat the most. I'll have to have a walk down to the op-shop and see if there's anything I can use to create a trellis for the tomatoes.

And oh, I've finished the book you gave me! Is it alright if I borrow the content/photo from your post because I'd like to pass it on.

I hope everything is going well with the toy purge!

Hi guys :-)

Kez, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't look forward to the toy component of birthdays! I love their excitement at opening their presents, but I cringe every time they receive yet another stuffed animal/ over-packaged plastic toy designed to last 10 minutes...

Ali, yep I have to do the same, otherwise we'd just be swamped with three kids!

lis, what a fabulous idea! I might see if I can instigate something similar (but perhaps a swap, as my kids are younger) at Playgroup?

Lisa, I live in a less-affluent suburb so I am always motivated to get rid of toys as I know that there are lots of kids nearby who don't have much, so they are going to good homes :-)

Cat - no worries :-) I should have also mentiong cucumbers - grow them up a trellis too to save room, they do really well. And you are more than welcome to use my post to pass on the book, I hope you got some use out of it, and I'd love for it to be passed on.

Cheers :-)
