I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Back to Basics Day #2

Back to Basics Day #2

Doing: Planting out mignonette lettuce seedlings. Due to restricted garden space these went into various pots near the back door for ease of picking.

Potting on Butternut pumpkin seedlings while I find room in the garden for them.

Picking strawberries.

Making: Bread Machine Bagels (wholemeal).

Dinner: Pan-fried marinated kangaroo fillets with hokkien noodle salad (noodles, cherry tomatoes, spring onions and salad greens with an olive oil/ balsamic vinegar dressing).

Challenge/s: I've been spot-cleaning my carpets and deodorising with bi-carb soda for a while but they have now gotten to the stage where they are in desperate need of a deep clean. I did the job myself some years ago at another house and the machine I hired did a pretty poor job so I've had them professionally done ever since, but I can't find a locally-based cleaner that doesn't use petro-chemical based products (although there seems to be heaps of "eco" cleaners in Sydney).

Solution/s: Suggestions?

Transgressions: We drove to school instead of walking (my excuse being that I had to get home quickly from an early [7am] excursion drop off as DH was minding the other two kids). Still, I could have just been more organised!

Reading: Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way we Make Things by McDonough and Braungart.

Utilities: Gas 29.7 MJ/day average this week; Water 360L/day average this week; Electricity 18.9 kWh/day average this week (11.9 kWh last 24 hours).

Contemplating: 30-Minute Microwave Mozzarella.
