I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Why China can produce cheap goods.

I was sent this email today, it was being forwarded as a joke, a bit of light entertainment. Unfortunately, I, personally, don't find anything about it amusing.

Why China can produce cheaper goods than us.

Construction site hard hats:

Welders Scaffolding:

Dust Masks:

Welding masks:

If you've ever picked up an item at a shop and wondered how on earth it could be produced so cheaply - that's why.

Oh, Good Lord!!! I was so horrified I forgot to laugh!!!

Especially, the three men standing as counterbalance and the man with a plastic bag over his face! What are they thinking?

My husband is a boilermaker, I can't wait to show him these pictures, he'll be astounded.

Regards,

Shell.

Shell, I was the same. I probably would have laughed once upon a time, but now it apalls me.

Hi Ali, pretty scary stuff, huh? Imagine the conditions of the workers in the hundreds of factories churning out toys that sell for $2 over here...

Cheers, Julie

If you haven't already seen it, you might like to watch The Story of Stuff (http://www.storyofstuff.com/), a 20 minute video which is on just this subject - it's not preachy, it's really good.

Hi Muppet, Yes, I got the link for The Story of Stuff from Daharja's blog (Cluttercut) yesterday but my 'puter crashed last night before I could watch it. I'm off to do that now, thanks for the tip :-)

Those photos remind me of PNG - the hospital I visted on Daru was full of makeshift equipment. The mines do help out eg they send out company doctors on a rotational basis and Ok Tedi refurbished the surgery suite but it's not enough. I mean, the hospital (the one and only health centre on Daru) only has GP type doctors who do minor surgery. So sad.

PS: My sister finally finished reading that book you sent me ages ago so I will do a post on my blog today offering it to someone else!

The working conditions are terrible aren't they. some time back I know I would have laughed too, I'm ashamed to say.

The license "plate" and the people in the first picture don't look Chinese. And the man in the third picture doesn't look Chinese either.
