I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Happy (belated) Australia Day!

Doing: ...Enjoying the aftermath of a lovely Australia Day BBQ with old friends yesterday. Between us there are 6 adults and nine children who catch up annually, which usually makes for the expected chaos and mayhem, with snatches of half-started conversation between running after various offspring during the day. Fortunately now however, most kids are old enough to entertain themselves to a certain extent - and only one still in nappies - with minimal refereeing from the parents, so we actually got to sit back and have a relatively relaxing day! The best kind of socialising I think - good friends, good food and good conversation - which epitomises the best of Aussie living :-)

... In an effort not to tip the scales over into Sloth and Gluttony, I ironed in front of the cricket and actually mended some clothes that have been sitting around for (dare I say it) several months. Whilst I am perfectly capable of sewing a button on, actually doing it seems to require a level of motivation way out of proportion to the actual act involved for some reason... Mind you, while I can sew a button on and mend a ripped seam, the aesthetic result of said ventures leave a lot to be desired! Sigh. Practice makes perfect, as they say.

Picking: Eggplants and herbs to freshen up yesterday's leftover salads.

Dinner: Sandwiches and leftover salad from yesterday.

Contemplating: Where I can scavenge lots of little (bamboo?) stakes to stick in the garden in order to stop this Boofhead from lying all over my newly-planted dwarf coffee bush:

how gorgeous is that pooch!?? Is he a long haired kelpie? Or a brown border collie? Gorgeous. re: bamboo stakes. There's a big wholesale nursery near here and they use the bamboo stakes for their plants. Last time we were there, they had a stack of them on the scrapheap - discarded for various reasons but that might be a source if you have something similar close by. Can't hurt to ask.

Hi TH, Our dogs are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers - and yes, that really is a breed!! They are like smaller, tan-coloured Golden Retrievers. Excellent idea re:stakes from the nursery, I wouldn't have thought of them throwing them away but I'm sure they do, and as you say, it can't hurt to ask. Thanks :-)
