I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Lovely sunny day, but...

Doing: Not trying out the solar cooker :-( It was a lovely sunny day today so i got out the solar cooker, excited about doing a trial run. Unfortunately, the whole set up was just too enticing for Miss 2 & 1/2 and I was worried she'd either break it, or worse, burn herself on it, if I wasn't constantly supervising it. I didn't have time for that today, so I'll have to leave it until probably Sunday, depending on the weather, when DH can look after the kids. D'oh! We are looking at building a special stand for it in the garden, long term, so that it will be up out of the way of curious hands.

Picking: Black Russian tomatoes, cherry tomaotes.

Dinner: Leftover silverbeet and lentil lasgane, and garlic pizza.

Reading: The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan.

Utility Averages 2008: Gas 30.3 MJ/day; water 352 L/day; electricity 9.6 kWh/day.

After all this time, I've only just realised I've been calculating my gas usage incorrectly! Gosh I do some dumb things sometimes... Anyway, it's all a bit long-winded to explain, and I'm not sure you'd know what I'm talking about anyway, LOL, suffice it to say I need to go away and recalculate. Hopefully it will mean a reduction the daily usages I've been working out - wouldn't that be nice?

I've also, surprisingly, almost run my rainwater tank dry, so I've had to start watering the vegies and pots using mains water - and look at the impact on my average water use! Admittedly, I've been tring to get the water in the tank down because I want DH to put another tap on it to use for directly filling water cans, but it's certainly shown me that it doesn't take too much to drain it (and I wasn't being wasteful with it).

I can't wait to hear how the solar cooker turns out. I'm considering building one for summer. I want one large enought to put my crock in. I'm in the northern hemisphere, so I have a few more months of snow yet.

It is hard to burn yourself on the solar cooker. It gets hot on the outside, but not as hot as an oven. In fact, I burned myself in the early days of using it because I had been handling the oven throughout the cooking time, opening it to check the food, turning it to catch the sun, all with bare hands. Then I forgot and tried to pick up the tray that was in there... ouch!

We mainly use ours on a table outside, out of the way of small people but I have used it on the ground too. Not much danger in it, I think. You could erect a little chicken wire and garden stake fence around it, maybe.

I am so eager to hear about your experiences with the solar cooker! I've heard a little about them and am curious to know if they're effective or not.

Can't wait to hear more...

Geez I hate spam!

Anyway, I think having a solar cooker large enough to put your crock pot insert (or similar casserole dish) in would be really convenient Debby, I'd definitely go for one that it does fit in.

Hi Suz, thanks for the heads up :-) I'm still worried Miss 2 might break the reflector, so we're going to do some reshuffling tomorrow to put a table in a good spot for it.

Hi Late Bloomer, I'm hoping to give it a go tomorrow, so I'll let you all know!

Cheers, Julie
