I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Thrifty finds

Doing: Dropping several bags of stuff off at the Salvos, and having a look around while I was there. I came home with two cane baskets, so the girls can have one each to pick their strawberries (they fight over the existing one, LOL), and this women's button up shirt:

It's not for me, although it is pretty, just not my size or style, LOL. I wanted a men's shirt to make a dress for Miss 6 from this tutorial, but I couldn't find any in a suitable colour or pattern. Luckily this one caught my eye on the way out. The pink roses are so pretty and girly-girl, just like they love at the moment:

It has several limitations though: it doesn't have a yoke at the back to use for the bodice, and it is a fitted shirt so there are darts on the back and on the front panels, plus darts under the bust. Hmmm. I think I can unpick the darts though if I can't work out how to incorporate them, and I can possibly use rick rack or ribbon to differentiate the bodice on the front, in lieu of using the yoke? It will be an interesting experiment for me though, as I haven't made a piece of clothing of any description since high school Textile and Design classes, over 20 years ago! And I don't have a pattern! Yikes :-0

Picking: Eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes.

Dinner: Eggplant bruschetta, using home grown vegetables and yesterday's vienna loaf.

Reading: The latest issue of Gardening Australia magazine.

Contemplating: Where I can get hold of some second-hand ribbon and/ or lace...
