Miss 6 has another two birthday parties next weekend, one girl and one boy, so I've been getting some more things together for their presents. The girl will receive a similar hot pink apron to
the ones I made last time, and I've decided that I'll make the boy a blue version of the apron. I don't know much about him other than he's a bit naughty in class, LOL, and that he's apparently obsessed with Doctor Who! His mother is a music teacher so she might have the patience to help him out in the kitchen, even if he is a bit "energetic", but if not he could use it to help his Dad BBQ I guess.
So I made up another apron in royal blue and found a Dr Who iron-on transfer to add to the front:

Looks suitably boy-ish I think?
Then to make up the present, this time I decided that putting all the items inside a cookie jar would not only eliminate unnecessary packaging, but be useful as well. So I found a nice sized cookie jar, and popped in the apron, and a child-sized wooden spoon. To finish it off, I made up a recipe card for very simple chocolate cookies (recipe
here) on the computer, printed it out and laminated it:

If you look closely, I used a picture of Doctor Who I
thieved off the Internet found legally as the background and called them "Doctor Who's Favourite Chocolate Shortbread Cookies". I even used the NSW Foundation Style Font to write it up, as that it the font they are using to learn to read at school.

So the end result: no disposable packaging, no plastic toys made from/ coated with potentially toxic materials and no small parts to get broken or lost, but DOES include a potential learning experience through reading and following a recipe and doing some cooking. Gosh, how virtuous am I feeling right now? ROFL!

Send me your address. I want to invite your kids to my kids next birthday party! ;)
It looks great and is very personal and thoughtful. What a precious gift! :)
Sensational present! I would be overjoyed if any of my children received a thoughtful gift like that.
Kate
That's just brilliant. Can I steal your idea (once I can sew?) :)
Love it :) (I hate to tell you but you're sounding like a home-school mum!!)
If the boy doesn't like cooking he can always use it as a 'building' apron. Great gift idea!
LOL Lightening :-D Thanks, though I hope he likes it!
Hi Kate, Thanks :-) I hope he likes it! As I mentioned, his mum is a music teacher, so I'm hoping that she is more into creative-style gifts than some of the other mums I know?!
Hi GF, of course! You are absolutely welcome to steal the idea, and I can assure you that I have no great skills in the sewing department, so if I can do it, anyone can - trust me :-)
Hi Kez, thanks :-) Yeah, I figured if he's not interested in cooking he can use it outside gardening or building or helping his Dad cook on the BBQ? Or they could even use it as a paint smock?
Cheers, Julie
Well done Julie, I know I'd love for one of my children to receive such a creative and well made gift!
I love the fact too that it has no waste :)
