I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

More drizzle today.

Quote of the Day:
"Frugality is enjoying the virtue of getting good value for every minute of your life energy and from everything you have the use of."

Your Money or Life, Dominguez and Robin.

Doing: ... It rained again overnight (19mm so far) and is drizling steadily all day but I dashed out in a break in the weather and pulled out my old tomato bushes, and sowed a packet of spring onion seeds. By all accounts, spring onions seems to germinate readily and prolifically, so fingers crossed ;-) I then had a quick wander around the garden again and...

...Discovered that after all this rain and humid weather lately, all three of my dwarf my peach trees are affected by some sort of disease that is causing them to ooze nasty-looking sap from the branchlet tips. I've posted about it on ALS, so I'm hoping someone can identify it and help me out. From some quick Googling, I think it might be "brown rot" or "gummosis", but I really don't know. I hope it doesn't kill them. One of the perils of trying to grow cold-climate plants in a warm, coastal climate I suppose, but peaches are soooo good.

But to offset that disappointment, I discovered a teeny tiny bean is forming on one of my bush bean seedlings that has, remarkably, survived the last couple of weeks. I might have beans yet!! Several of the "Lazy Housewife" been seeds I sowed a few days ago have germinated, but like on the two previous occaisons I sowed them, it has proceeded to rain for a couple of days - and it's forecast to persist for another 3-4 days - which is likely to rot the rest of them in the ground. Sigh.

I also discovered the very first flower forming on my Dragon Fruit vine! Yay. Apparently the smell divine but only open at night (and for only one night), so I hope I manage to catch it opening. It's only tiny yet, so I hope someone or something doesn't knock it off on their way past the vine (the story of my life when you have three energetic kids and two boisterous dogs!)

And the carambola (starfruit) are flowering:

Making: Crusty bread rolls. A utility use goals and averages list to stick to the fridge: theoretically it should motivate us to do much better with our resources usage.

Picking: Eggplants, strawberries.

Dinner: Free-range chicken and vegetable soup, with crusty fresh bread.

Hi
Your garden is looking wonderful, it brought a smile to my face to read your comment about the beans rotting from the rain, I can't get beans up (or if I do they are very (poorly) from lack of rain! {But we woke this morning to drizzle!}
Your peach trees may have canker in them. I would need more details maybe someone else knows better. I hope it is not canker!
Have a wondeful weekend - Emily

Hi Emily, thanks :-) I hope it is still drizzling at your place! Most of my bean seeds have actually germinated for a change, but it will be interesting to see how many survive... Thanks for the tip re: canker on my peach, I will go and do some research on it now.

Cheers, Julie

Your garden looks great (apart from the icky peaches). I wonder what is wrong with them?

Hello I wonder if this would help about your peaches http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/fruit/peach.html
The first question. I was looking to find out is I could grow a fruit tree from my peach seed, and found this instead.
Alicia Happy gardening.

Hi Kate, thanks :-) Amazing what some rain will do for things!

Alicia! You are a dead-set legend, THANK YOU! Phew, you have no idea how relieved I feel now, I thought they were all going to die on me but it seems it should all resolve itself (I hope). Happy gardening to you too :-D

Cheers, Julie
