I felt, as Kevin Rudd suggested, that this is a new page in our history as a country, and it is my fervent hope that this day isn't just one of words. I have the greatest respect for the aboriginal people, and it is my belief, that as the original stewards of our country, that we as a society can learn - and should learn - from their thousands of years of history on how to take care of this land; to stop polluting it and destroying the unique flora and fauna.
An aboriginal friend once told me many years ago that this land is their equivalent of a Christian person's church, and that the degredation of it by white people is to them, like someone walking in and urinating on the altar.
It's a graphic image that has stuck with me ever since.
So it's my hope that not only can we as a nation get rid of the disgusting divide between white and aboriginal health, housing and educational issues, but that we can also for the first time, properly listen to the advice of the original Australians on how to look after this beautiful land that we now share.
