I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

To market, to market...

Doing: ...Going to the local Farmer's Markets. It was packed this morning (probably because it wasn't actually raining at the time LOL) so I just grabbed 5 kilos of locally grown Roma tomatoes ($15) and 3 kilos of local-ish bananas ($5), and headed back home!

...Spurred on by local Aussie bloggers such as Molly and Belinda, I have joined the 100 Foot Diet Challenge at Path To Freedom. The challenge is simply:

"Beginning as soon as you can, prepare a meal at least once a week with only homegrown vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs, dairy products or meat, using as few store bought ingredients as possible."

The guidelines are also very simple:

"A meal must be comprised of food grown on your property or garden plot (literally or figuratively within “100 feet” of your front or back door). If non-homegrown ingredients are needed, then we suggest following these modified locavore guidelines:

If not from BACKYARD, then Locally produced.
If not LOCALLY PRODUCED, then Organic.
If not ORGANIC, then Family farm.
If not FAMILY FARM, then Local business.
If not a LOCAL BUSINESS, then Fair Trade
. "

I've successfully made a few almost 100% homegrown dishes over this summer, so I am hoping that this challenge will inspire me to keep up this effort as much as possible and think a bit more closely about what I am growing and how I can use it. I'll be posting about it here of course. Wish me luck, especially as a lot of my salad stuff has now finished. I only have eggplants and silverbeet at the moment, with the second lot of zucchini coming along and spring onions up, with a few bean plants survivng the snails and slugs (but I don't expect to get much off them), and dozen carrots or so left. The second lot of potatoes should be ready soon too though. Hmm, better get my thinking cap on!

... Watching DH head off on his maiden voyage on his new electric-boosted bicycle (I'm going to call it the e-bike, LOL). He set off elated, but scootered home with a broken peddle and cog! Not happy. Back to the dealer on Tuesday (they aren't open tomorrow), so it looks like he will be commuting in the car again for at least another week. Bummer.

Making: Chicken stock x 2 litres. Garlic and basil pasta sauce x 4 jars (equivalent). Red onion jam x 1 jar.

Dinner: Fresh chicken and vegetable soup with crusty bread.

Reading: The Weather Makers, Tim Flannery. Yet another important book I bought on eBay and haven't gotten around to reading yet. Ah well, I'm working through the list.

Contemplating: Making another batch of basil pesto tomorrow.

I've been making saag paneer with silverbeet, I find it's easy to make up the silverbeet (or spinach) and spices mix early in the day (when the kid is playing by himself) and then cook the rice while adding the paneer (cheese, if anyone's wondering) and yoghurt to the silverbeet.

It's pretty easy, I tend to tone down the chilli at the moment because the little one is still getting the hang of it. Basically you wilt the spinach/silverbeet and puree it with garlic, chilli, ginger, garam masala, so it only takes a few minutes.

Hey Crazy
Being a relatively new blogger, I was tickled pink to see some-one find something of use on my blog!

I too struggle at times to fill a complete days menus, we do what we can with what we have. Slowly but surely we will build our self sustaining life styles :)
cheers

Hi Crazy Mumma,

Thanks for joining up these things are always easier when you have other people working toward it too.

I suspect by mid winter we will be scouring each others blogs for interesting menu ideas.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Hi Crazy Mumma,
Love your locavore guidelines, so simple, and what i like to do as well. Have to make the effort to get out to the farmers markets more, as I regreat each time I buy from the supermarket.

Hi Kate, Mmmmm yum. I love paneer, I'm definitely giving this a go, thanks :-)

Hi Molly, I've been looking at the PTF challenge fora while, but you and Belinda gave me that kick in the butt to sign up :-)

I think you are right about looking for recipe ideas in mid winter Belinda! But I think that having some other Aussies join was what inspired me - I didn't want to be reading about everyone else eating salads when it's cold and wet over here :-)

Hi Han, I'm with you, I hate shopping at the stupidmarket now!

Cheers, Julie
