I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

U.S. Riot 4 Austerity figures for our house

I received an email over the weekend asking me if I'd mind converting our resources use figures to the U.S. Riot 4 Austerity figures. I was quite curious myself, so here they are:

Petrol/ gas: R4A allows for 50 gallons per person, per year for a 90% reduction on US average figures. Our household use at the moment is about 52.3 gallons per month, or 125.5 gallons per person, per year. This is 25% of the US average per person, and it is 17% of the Aussie average per person.

Electricity: R4A allows for 1100 kWh/ year/household. We are averaging 4780 kWh/ year at the moment, which is 44% of the US average, but only 59% of the Aussie average (although it is 100% renewable energy).

Natural gas: R4A allows for 100 therms per year, or 10550 Megajoules. We are averaging 11680 MJ per year, or 11% of the US average, and 17% of the Aussie average.

Garbage: R4A allows for 0.45 pounds per person, per day, or 2.25 pounds per day for the five of us. We currently average 2.6 kilograms per week, which is 0.07kg per person per day, or 0.2 pounds per person per day (this does not include recycling). That is 4% of the US average and 11% of the Aussie average. Including recycling in this figure brings it up to 0.35 pounds per day, or 8% of the US average.

Water: R4A allows for 10 gallons per person per day. We are averaging 65.6 litres per person per day, or 17.3 gallons per day, per person (that doesn't include any allowance for our three pets). This is about 17% of the US average and 27% of the Aussie average.

I don't have any concrete figures yet for consumer spending and food.
