I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

There's a reason I don't like weeding...

...'Cause good things are starting to pop up all over the place.
Like rocket seedlings between the pavers...

Dill plants in the gravel...

And a little forest of Italian parsley in the gravel near my back steps.

Less useful, but quite interesting volunteers include this ferny plant that has appeared in the gravel on the south side of my house:

It is presumably some type of braken as there are no signs of a tree-fern type trunk...

...along with another ferny plant a bit further along.

Just nearby, is a vine that has sprouted and wound it's way up the brick wall and under the eaves:

It hasn't flowered yet, but I'm guessing it's some sort of Hardenbergia, although it's not the common H. violacea as the mature leaves on this vine are a dark purple, with an interesting pink central vein:

Any guesses?

I won't hazard a guess but the vine I would remove sorry.
It will grow between your bricks and into your roof causing damage. I know this because it happened to us. The vine forced our roof apart and rot set in not fun.
Maybe cut it back a bit. Sorry to be a spoil sport.

LOL, I get marigolds and rocket coming up everywhere. I have even taken to leaving dandelion because it is edible...

I get quietly excited at self-sowns too; it's almost as if the garden is becoming itself, in a Jackie French wild-garden kind of way. Our spaces are reaching the stage now where the weeds and the volunteers are finding a seasonal rhythm, and I'm beginning to know what to leave and what to pull.

Isabell Shipard has lots of info on edible weeds, so I'm looking forward to learning more about them.

Hi

Here are a couple of links that may help you identify it once it flowers.

No idea about the mystery plants, but I do love how your parsley knows it has to come up near the back door for last minute dinner flavouring.

Hi Crazy Mumma,

Don't we all love those volunteers? They really are the healthiest plants around as far as I can tell.

I have to admit to being with the lady that suggested taking the vine down though I would probably move it to a fence. Vines and houses I generally find don't mix very well.

Kind Regards
Belinda

I'd be excited at finding those too! I'm just envious that you can identify most of them. lol! I can't wait till things like that happen to our garden.

Hi cleatherocreations, Yes, unfortunately I think you are right; on closer inspection I noticed the very tip was at the join between the gutter and the fascia board, so out it came!

Hi Suz, That reminds me, I really must get some Marigolds growing with the vegies! It's taken me a while because I don't like yellow or orange flowers, LOL, but the kids will love them.

Hi Em, I used to hate "messy", "disorganised" gardens, but I must be getting much more laid-back in my "old-age" as I'm really enjoying the way it is becoming much less structured and more self-organised :-) Isabell Shipard seems to be a wealth of information doesn't she? I have her books on my wish-list.

Hi anonymous, thanks for the links!

Hi innercitygarden - Yep, I have most of my herbs growing near the back door for that reason, but they do still tend to spread a bit, it's quite surprising.

Hi Belinda, Yes I agree after a closer look at the vine, so DH pulled it down over the weekend...
Pity it wasn't growing up the fence instead.

Hi E :-) It won't be long until your garden is rocketing away and you have volunteers coming up everywhere :-)

Cheers, Julie

I've just found a plethora of radishes in the garden - and I haven't planted any radish seeds for about 3 years LOL.
