I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

We've finally done it!

We've finally listed our second car for sale! It's going to be a bit awkward for a while I think, since it's a wagon, which means we will no longer be able to take our dogs out to the in-laws when we go away, or pick up large items ourselves from hardware stores etc, as well as having to have a system to get DH to work if it's too wet and windy to bicycle the 20km each way. But still, it will be nice to be rid of it.

It's not a gas guzzler, but then it isn't particularly economical, although it's four cylindars, so it wouldn't surprise me if it takes a long time to sell actually. Who knows though, it might be perfect for someone downsizing from a 6 cylindar wagon? It will also be nice to decrease the mortgage a bit more, even if it isn't by much.

To leave off, apropos of nothing, here are some gratuitous food shots:

Fresh organic orange cordial. The bottles are a thrift store find.

Smartie biscuits (cookies), made from Smarties I liberated from the girls' lolly bags after a birthday party last weekend.

Next month's NaBloPoMo theme is "Food", so I am thinking of signing up again, with the hopes that:

a) it motivates me to cook/make/preserve something each day;
b) it will hopefully motivate me to improve my photography skills (and I use the term "skills" loosely, LOL);
c) it might help to show that even though it's winter here in Australia, we can still find a heap of fresh, local, yummy produce to eat; and
d) it might inspire others to have a go at/ do more cooking from scratch.

It's a good theory anyway, LOL.

Hi! I am a new reader of your blog, found it via a link to your homemade dishwasher powder.

Really enjoying reading your blog as its a path I want to take our family on too :)

Do you have a recipe for your orange cordial, looks yummy!

Great decision to sell the second car Crazy Mumma. I dare say you will benefit from it in ways you wouldn't have thought of. No more rego, insurance, maintenance, fuel, tyres, road side assistance, the list and savings just keep growing. I hope it sells quickly.

Hi guys, thanks! We've had one looker for the car so far, but not a great amount of interest yet *shrug*.

Hi Dee, the recipe I use for fruit cordials is 1 part fruit juice to 1 part sugar syrup (which is 1 part water and 1 part sugar, heated gently until the sugar dissolves). If I am storing it (always in the fridge) for a while I add a teaspoon of citric acid per litre too, which extends it's freshness.

Hi Gavin,
Yes, that was half the reason we wanted to sell it - it is coming up for rego in August and boy, will that save us some money if we don't have re-register it and pay for insurance! Better to have it paid off the mortgage.

Cheers, Julie
