I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Felt Food

Firstly, inclement weather has put my potato tower plans on hold this weekend, so no pics to show you yet I'm sorry.

Secondly, I finally met up with Kez for the first time today (hi Kerrie!) which was lovely, but far too brief ;-) You see, I was on a mission: To plunder my nearest Spotlight store for craft materials, haberdashery and cotton fabrics, in order to quench my new-found desires to sew, and knit and (gasp!) crochet.

As you can see, I am now well on the way to developing a stash, as I came home with - amongst other things - this gorgeous pile of fabrics for the princely sum of $2 - $3 a metre! If you have to buy new, you can't go past a sale, that's for sure (provided you know what you are looking for, that is, and not just randomly buying things).

Growing up I was tomboy of the most enthusiastic kind, and would have just about vomited if my mother had made me wear clothes made from any of these fabrics - let alone dresses - but God has a sense of humour, and has has seen fit to present me with three, utterly girly girls who refuse to wear pants and are obsessed with pink and all things pretty. So these fabrics are destined to be mixed and matched to become (hopefully!) a series of twirly ruffle skirts, halter dresses and tops and wrap dresses/ tunics.

Another of the items on my To-Do List is to try my hand at making felt play food - an interest that has been sweeping across the crafting world in the past year. Check out the felt food group on Flickr - oh my goodness, there are some seriously talented craftsters out there!

So one of the items I was searching for at Spotlight was wool felt. Sadly, they only had some nasty-feeling acrylic felt, but I did find a seller on eBay selling some lovely wool felt in bulk, which worked out at the same price as the acrylic even including the postage. Gotta love that.

Anyway, Miss Two is turning three in a few weeks (gosh, where did that time go?!), so I have the perfect excuse to have a go at some of the simpler felt foods, such as the pretty embroidered and/or beaded "biscuits" you can see examples of in the Flickr photos. I hope they work! Not that Miss Soon-to-be-Three will care much if they are wonky, LOL.

So now I'm waiting anxiously for my felt to arrive. In the meantime, I will be looking through my local op-shops to find a suitable biscuit tin that I can re-cover if needs be (with Contact leftover from covering Miss Six's school books), then wrap - and ultimately store - the "biscuits" in. Stay tuned for pics!

I could spend a long time looking at the photos of felt food. They look like so much fun to make.

I also bought some felt the other day. It is sitting on my sewing table at the moment, I'm not sure what I am going to do with it, I couldn't resist the colours.

Gorgeous prints!! I was also a tomboy as a child and now the older I get, the more traditional and old fashioned I get!!

Hi Rachel,
Oh I shudder to think how much time I've spent drooling over photos of other people's craftwork!

Hi Sandra,
Felt is so lovely and tactile, isn't it? It doesn't really matter what it's used for I think, it always looks like something you want to pick up and touch :-)

Hi Tracy,
Thanks, I hope my sewing can do the fabric justice!

Hi Felicity,
Yes, I'm getting like that now, isn't it weird? I still won't wear skirts and dresses as a rule though ;-)

Hi Melissa,
I'm sure yours is one of the blogs that has featured the gorgeous felt food that has been inspiring me! I definitely aspire to being as artistic as you, I think I missed out on those genes, LOL.

Cheers, Julie

Thanks for that link to the felt food group! I make my own too, so I'll try to join the flickr group. Good luck with the felt food making, it's fun!

Hi Cecile,
Thanks for dropping by :-) I'm looking forward to making some of the felt food when I can find the time, but somehow I don't think it will be good enough to post photos of LOL. No that the kids will care ;-)

Cheers, Julie
