I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Homemade Muesli Bars - NaBloPoMo #1

Well, I've signed up to the NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) challenge for July, and the theme is "food". I had grand plans to try and showcase what you can do with local foods in the middle of winter around here, but as they say, "the best laid plans" and all that ;-) I'm not feeling very well, so the best I can come up with for today is these muesli bars the kids and I made this morning.

Having a child who is affected by many of the artificial preservatives and additives present in conventional foods, means that we tend to steer clear of commercial snacks, including muesli bars. Really though, what could be easier than making your own? Plus you have the added bonuses of knowing what is in them, you can inlcude as many organic ingredients as you can/ would like, and they are cheaper than the bought ones. The more ingredients you can source locally, organically, and/or in bulk in reusable containers, the better for the environment as well.

I forget where I originally found the recipe I use for these - I think it was a sports nutrition website? - but these are substantially lower in sugar and fat than most muesli bar recipes, which means that I don't have to monitor the kids' consumption of them as closely as regular ones (and they go fast around here).

I've copied the recipe to my recipe blog, here, if you are interested. We use local-ish organic oats, local organic eggs and oranges (to make the juice) which are fresh and sweet at this time of year, local bulk honey, Australian organic sultanas and Weet-Bix, and Aussie dried apricots when I can get them, otherwise we substitute other dried fruit or nuts like cashews.

I'm glad I got a photo recorded before they all disappeared ;-)

I'll be sure to try these for the reasons you have mentioned. I agree with them all. I have had it in the back of my mind to try for some time along with the handmade soap. How did yours go ?

Hi Michelle,
I haven't made the soap yet sadly, as I haven't had a child-free opportunity yet! I'm hoping that I can get a couple of hours tomorrow though? I'm paranoid enough doing it myself for the first time, I don't need the kids interrupting or trying to help, LOL.
Cheers, Julie
