I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Raspberries. Mmmmmmm.

My plans to spend this child-free week cooking up a storm and freezing dozens of healthy meals has come to naught, since I am banned from preparing food whilst I am radioactive :-(

In a word - bugger.

So, in an effort to distract you momentarily until I can cook something and take pics of it for my National Blog Posting Month commitment, I will show you what turned up on my doorstep this morning:

Raspberry canes x 2. Of the autumn-bearing "Heritage" variety, which as you can see from the label, don't need chilling to flower, unlike other brambleberries apparently. I already have one in the garden, with a now vacant space either side of it from where I harvested the ginger recently (I have decided to grow the ginger and turmeric in pots next summer, so that they will be easier to harvest), and you know how I hate wasted space ;-)

Fingers crossed they do OK - we do love our berries around here :-)

Wow, restricted from making food. It never even occurred to me. Interesting. Oh well, you have the raspberries! Those are going to be SO YUM.

Yum!

Are raspberries thorny?

Those look like Daley's tags to me...I must resist the urge to order more plants!!! I really need more space :( I wonder if anyone would notice if strange new plants started turning up in the gardens around the apartment block? :D

Hi Ladies :-)

Yes Kez, the raspberries are thorny unfortunately. But they don't grow into thumping big bushes like blackberries, and you prune them down to the ground in winter, so I'm hoping the prickles aren't a big issue with the kids? Maybe it will keep them away and I might get some for myself, LOL (Yeah, fat chance).

Em, you might need to do some "guerilla gardening" around your apartment block, surruptiously planting edibles! In all seriousness, many edibles are as pretty (if not more so) than ornamentals, so if you chose wisely you could easily get away with planting many useful plants in community areas! Even simple herbs planted as a border.

Cheers, Julie
