I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Strawberry, chocolate... and sage.

No, not all three together ;-)

I've been a busy little vegemite today, but none of my activity involved food I'm afraid! So I'm going to have to cheat a bit on my NaBloPoMo commitment ;-)

My very first knitting project ever was a dish/pot scrubber I knitted out of garden twine in November last year, but I haven't done anything more with my needles since. It's been quite chilly here of late (well der, it's winter!), so it seemed only natural to take up my knitting needles again. I decided to start on the most logical of beginner knitter projects - a scarf for myself, knitted with chunky wool on big 7mm needles (I figured a chunky, textured wool would be more forgiving of errors, which it is!). However, after watching me knit for a while, Miss 6 decided that a beanie (for her, or course) would be a more appropriate project for me, LOL.

Hence I present to you, my very first knitted item of clothing!

A strawberry-coloured wool beanie, as modelled by Miss 6 ;-)

DH was suitably impressed with this beanie, and not-so-subtly hinted that his head was getting mighty cold on his morning ride to work, so instead of finishing my scarf out came the needles again, and voila! I present to you, knitted item #2:

A chocolate-coloured 2 x 2 rib beanie for DH (as modelled by Miss 6 again). Of course, it isn't supposed to be pixie-cap shaped, LOL, when DH wears it, it's more like this:

Tee hee :-)

Last night, I finally got around to finishing off the knitting part of my scarf - although I am yet to finish the fringing (that's tonight's project). So again, I present to you, knitted item #3:

My sage-coloured 2 x 2 chunky rib scarf :-)

Miss 6 has also asked for a scarf to match her beanie, which I will do, but I'm also going to take up the challenge of knitting a matching bolero jacket for her! Could be interesting, especially as it involves lots of decorative work around the edging... The basic jacket seems pretty straight forward though, with no button holes or anything, and it's on 7.5mm needles so it's a "quick" knit - wish me luck!

Wow, I'm very impressed! I love the colours...really natural. In fact you have inspired me to take up the challenge. It's supposed to be summer here, when the rains disperses, sometimes we see the sun! Maybe Ill have learnt to knit by winter...lol! I absolutely love the pot scrubber, I use washable cloths for washing up but couldn't find any natural scubbers...this is fab! Love your blog it's a great read.

They look fabulous. I wish I was more talented (read patient) in knitting things.
Which pattern did you use ?

Hi Kez, thanks :-)

Emmani, I love your blog too, thanks :-) Knitting with garden twine isn't the easiest thing to do as it is very "sticky", so can get a bit frustrating! But it works well as a scrubber - and when it's no good any more it can go in the compost bin (well, maybe someone else's bin!).

Michelle, the pattern for the beanie was from a booklet I borrowed from a friend - Panda "Zoomy" kids knits, I think it is, it's made for beginner knitters. The scarf I just made up as 2 x 2 rib, and the beanie is adapted from a pattern I found on the 'net, but I changed it to a 2 x 2 rib (instead of stocking stitch) and left off the roll-up brim!

Cheers, Julie
