Growing Challenge: Off and Running!

The weather around here isn't warming up much yet, but I decided I'd better get my butt into action anyway, and clean out the mini-greenhouse this week, in preparation for sowing seeds as part of Melinda's Growing Challenge.

That done, I decided that maybe it wasn't too early to start sowing - and that big empty greenhouse looked a bit sad ;-) So I had a look at a couple of my organic gardening books, and discovered that fortuitously, August 13 and 14 were supposed to be good days for sowing seeds according to Moon Planting theory.

So I rifled through my seed packets and decided upon sowing:

* Tomatoes, Rouge de Marmande and Tommy Toe
* Luffa seeds
* Tatsoi
* Mustard greens
* Pumpkin, Waltham Butternut
* Broccoli, Green Sprouting
* Squash, Golden Scallopini
* Capsicum (Bell Peppers), California Wonder
* Strawberry Spinach
* Ground Cherries, Aunt Molly
* Four types of lettuce (Cos Verdi, Cos Freckles, Purple and Green Oak Leaf).

Phew! With the exception of the pumpkin, lettuce and ground cherries (and tomatoes that have sprouted in the compost!), all of these seeds are new to me. I have grown capsicum and squash from seedlings, but never from seeds.

I can only hope now that I can achieve germination of at least some of those seeds. The greenhouse gets only about 4 hours of sun a day at the moment (and I don't have anywhere else to conveniently place it), so I worry that that won't be enough? It is up against a brick wall though which should radiate some heat back. But it is still getting very cold here overnight (about 0-5'C/ 32-41'F), so I worry that the soil will still be too cold for germination, especially the tomatoes. Note to self: I really must get myself a Max/Min thermometer. Having said that, I have cherry tomato seedlings coming up in my garden already, so it can't be too cold? I guess I'll know by this time next week, when I will report back with an update :-)

P.S. The building of the potato "towers" has stalled, but I found some wire mesh this morning so I am going to try two "cages" for my Kipflers to begin with (did anyone else see Josh's cages on Gardening Australia last night? Great timing). The towers will still be built as I want to also try growing some pink-skinned Desiree and perhaps some Dutch Creams. I just need to wait for DH to pull the timber pallets apart, 'cause I'm just not strong enough to do it myself.

Hi Kel,
No worries mate ;-) Looking forward to reading about your progress :-)

Hi Nicole,
Have fun with your seeds! I can almost smell Spring in the air after a gorgeous day like today, so the prospect of home grown spring and summer vegies is very exciting :-)

Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie,
Snap! You must have the same 'discount chains' in Oz for the cheapest gardening supplies!

You look like you're going to be busy, I look forward to following the results...

I'd love to know more about moon planting? I'll google and look into it, but I've never heard of it before. Something I've thought about is sowing times for different parts of the world, there doesn't seem to be much info on best times to sow in India, so maybe following the moon is what I need to do,

Thanks!

Nice setup you have there Julie. It looks like mine, but without the bubble wrap roof. I am up for the growing challenge! I just hope my seed order gets here soon, or all I will have this year are tomatoes and capsicums! I wish you great success this growing season.

You should be fine with it. I started my capsicums and tomatoes off in my one (exactly same greenhouse) about 6 weeks ago and they are thriving.
We've had sun the last few days in Perth, and the thing gets bloody hot, so I have started losing some seedlings to the heat (when I forget to open it up during the day).

I think I need to get a greenhouse to get my veggies started off. Not sure one like that would stay upright with my two around

Hi Emma,
Wow, I hope my seedlings look as good as yours soon :-) And yep, I reckon those greenhouses are manunfactured in the millions and shipped around the world...

Hi Gavin,
Thanks mate, I did notice that my greenhouse is the same as yours, so now I now what to do if the roof gets wrecked :-) My Diggers seeds are taking forever too - they must be run off their feet at this time of year I reckon.

Hi thimbleina,
I loaded up my bottom shelf with bricks to stop the girls (or the wind) knocking it over, as you are right, it is very light and not particularly stable. The bricks seem to be doing the job nicely though (and in theory should be radiating some warmth back into the greenhouse when the sun goes off it?).

Cheers, Julie

I'm glad I found your web site. I am trying to be more environmentally conscience. Thanks! ang

Hi Ang,
Thanks for leaving a comment (and your kind words), I always love to hear from new readers :-)

Kez, I got mine from Bunnings, and they are on special from time to time I've noticed, although their stock seems sporadic (must depend on when the next boat load comes in ;-)

Hi Cath, Yeah I got mine for about the same price (and it's obviously the same as yours).

Cheers, Julie

Just for those UK bloggers, I got mine from Wilkinsons in their catalogue. It cost me £14.99...I'm not sure if they still have them as they stopped stocking seeds about a month ago.
Imagine everyone all over the world having the same greenhouse!

Kez 19/8/08 7:28 AM

Thanks Julie - I'll head over today and check them out if I get a chance. I'm still saving for my compost bin but I might be able to stretch to one of those..
