I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Growing Challenge Update #3

Despite the cold weather, there's been some more germination action in the greenhouse this week, with some of the strawberry spinach seedlings popping up:

And some of the lettuce:

We have action in the luffa cells:

And the golden squash seeds are popping up :-)

Sadly, the tomatoes and capsicum are recalcitrant and refuse to show any signs of life yet :-( I've moved the tomato seed tray to the top of the hot water service to see if that improves the situation, although it must be quite well insulated because it doesn't feel warm up there (and it's on the very dark, south side of the house). Ah well, I might just have to wait until the weather warms more, although it's quite frustrating that I have dozens of self-sown cherry tomato seedlings popping up in the garden, LOL.

In other garden news, we have bud-burst on the grape vines:

And, check it out people:

Asparagus spears! This is the first year we will be actually harvesting the spears to eat: Oh yeah, baby, bring it on :-)

We have asparagus up too so spring really is nearly here. I am going to get some seeds going tomorrow. I'm looking forwad to your spring simple living posts too.
