I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Lemons, anyone?

Remember that box of lemons from Sunday? I spread them out on the dining table and the family were getting antsy so it was time to do something with them.

First I made some more Moroccan preserved lemons:

But I only had one big preserving bottle left. So then I made some lemon butter (lemon curd):

But I ran out of eggs. So I tried some microwave lemon marmalade:

But then I ran out of jam jars. So I juiced a stack of them to freeze in cordial- and recipe-sized portions:

Then I ran out of room in my freezer. So I made some lemon cordial:

And some limoncello which used up the vodka I bought for a party in 1993 (seriously), and the last two empty bottles in the cupboard:

I still have this many left:

All I can say is, thank goodness I don't have a full-sized lemon tree!

They are really great to clean with. I use a cut up lemon squeeze juice in a bowl, add a little water and the left over lemon pieces and put in the microwave. Microwave for 1:30 mins and then take out, take rag dipped in hot lemon juice water to wipe down the inside of the microwave. Smells great and cleans SO well. I also like using the zest in recipes, and using left over lemons in the garbage disposal to clean.

all the stuff you made looks AWESOME!!

Hi Kez,
Um yep, that would be right! I've already given away three huge bags too!

Hi Kel,
I'm reaching my limit of lemons too, especially since I have about the same amount still on the tree... Still, I'd rather be giving them away than *gasp* having to buy them, LOL.

Crone - seriously, THREE lemon trees??? Dear Lord, you'll be busy!

Hi Tyggereye,
Oooh I love cleaning with lemons too! It makes the *best* oven scrub when mixed into a paste with rock salt. And I add it to my dishwashing liquid for it's grease-cutting power, plus the gorgeous scent :-)

Hi Tracy,
You don't get much "simpler" than the traditional lemon tree in the backyard, do you?

Hi Kate,
Thanks :-)

Cheers, Julie

I am soooo envious. No chance whatsoever that lemons would grow here in Wales. Even with global warming things just seem to be getting wetter not warmer. I can't even imagine picking my own, let alone having too many.
