I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Simple Days #10

Doing: ... Visiting my endocrinologist, who is not very happy with the results so far from my radio-iodine therapy in July :-( Bummer. Three more months of the pincushion treatment (i.e. regular blood tests) and back to see him in December.

... The umpteen dozen errands that involve long queues and/or waiting times that you do to take advantage of a child-free day.

Making: My first felt donut using this tutorial. I'm in the process of stuffing a second one at the moment, which I hope to finish tonight, but I think this one turned out reasonably well; the beads are supposed to be hundreds and thousands in case it isn't obvious ;-) They are going to be part of Miss 4's birthday present next month, so even though the sewing is pretty amateurish, I don't think she'll care LOL. Practice makes perfect as they say!

The cat thought it was good enough to eat, so it can't be too bad ;-)

Baking: Date slice for the kids' lunchboxes, using prunes instead of dates. Because, you know, I'm evil ;-)

In the Garden: Topping up the mulch on the cage potatoes. Watering the vegies with dilute worm wee and the seedlings with dilute seaweed soution to encourage root growth.

Dinner: Early season local (ish) red capsicums were on special today - $2.99 a kilo! Thus dinner tonight was a roasted red capsicum sauce...

Served over fresh homemade wholemeal pasta.

Reading: Earth Garden magazine, September - November edition.

Contemplating: The arrival of Sharon Astyk's book, Depletion and Abundance. I had it on back order pending publishing, and I've just received an email saying it was mailed today. Woot!

I've been lurking a while, just wanted to say thanks for the inspiring blog and hugs for the future blood tests. Love the donut too!

Hi Melinda,
Thanks - and if I can make one, anyone can! I am very much a beginner sewer.

Hi Sarah,
Have a go! As I said to Melinda, if I can manage to sew it, anyone can ;-)

Hi Rachel,
You'll have to post pics too if you make one (I;m sure yours will put mine to shame too LOL).

Hi fiveminutesmore,
Thanks! I love it when people 'delurk' and leave a comment, it makes me feel like I'm not just waffling on to myself :-) Thanks for the cyber-hugs too, much appreciated :-)

Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, I am a regular lurker, love your blog read it every day. I am also a fellow pin cushion, and am having a total thyroidectomy on the 30th September. I decided against the radioactive iodine. Am hoping my levels get sorted out quickly as my veins don't cooperate much. Thank you so much for blogging for us all. Love Julia

Hi Julia,

Thanks you so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I love to hear about the people who stop by :-) Sorry to hear about thyroidectomy (I dislike hospitals so surgery kinda freaks me out), but I really hope that once that is done you can get on with life normally again. My veins are terrible too, so I feel your pain! I have to drink at least 1 litre of water before a blood test (so that they can find a vein!) and they need to use a butterfly needle or my veins just collapse straight away. Blergh.

Cheers, Julie

So sorry to read that you are going to have to have more bloods taken Julie. I too hate having them done but have been very lucky to have good veins and a good vampire!

Hi L,
LOL at having a good vampire! there is one woman at the pathology who is great but I only seem to get her every third or fourth time, dammit!

Cheers, Julie
