Simple Days #15

Doing: Returning a couple of pieces of wickerware to regular service. Rhonda posted on how to look after your baskets a couple of months ago, so I followed her instructions with these two items which had seen better days. First a quick, gentle wash with a soapy water and a toothbrush, then a rinse with the hose to remove the soap. I let them dry in the shade outside for a few days, and then rubbed them down with some vegetable oil on a clean cloth. I let it soak in for a few hours and then gently buffed off the excess oil with another clean cloth.

It returned this:

And this:

Just like new again :-)

Making: Ginger beer. Strawberry smoothies, and then iceblocks out of the leftovers.

In The Garden: ...Harvesting: two blueberries (I gave these ones to the kids ;-), snow peas, three more asparagus spears, spring onions, baby bok choy.

...Trying to water all the potted plants to keep up with the horrible, hot westerly winds today :-(

Dinner: Stir-fried vegies and marinated tofu with hokkien noodles.

Reading: Gardening Australia magazine.

Contemplating: All the hand made items on my Christmas list that I haven't even started yet. Sigh.

Wow that really did turn up a nice result on the baskets..I picked up a few a couple of weekends ago that look like they could use that level of love.

Kind Regards
Belinda

I just found your blog a few days ago and have been reading nonstop! I LOVE the "simplicity days" posts, and look forward to reading it each morning. And I love reading about springtime activities...we are just going into fall, so its fun to see what we'll be doing in 6 months or so!

And those baskets look great! I would have never thought they would have turned out that good-they look brand new!

Your (newly) faithful reader from the US..

Hi Belinda,
Yes I was really pleased with how they turned out. They looked so tired and unloved before hand.

Hi Marie,
Oh, thank you so much :-) I love a lot of things about autumn here, but spring is just wonderful!

Hi Bron,
Thank you :-) It's so lovely to know that people are getting something out of the work I put into downloading photos etc every day, it makes it all definitely worthwhile!

Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie - a quick question about the stirfry.... could you talk me through the tofu part if you have time please or point me to a good recipe? I do love a good stirfry and easy many while Peter is away (since he doesn't really like them) but I use chicken. Also, do you know if you can freeze marinated tofu ready to cook up?

Thanks, Cat. :)

Hi Cat,
I use firm tofu for stir fries. Just cube it and pour some soy sauce over it and let it marinate while I cut up the other vegies before cooking it. I also add other things as I feel like it - chilli sauce or chilli powder, ginger, garlic, oyster sauce - all the Asian flavours work really well. Tofu by itself is really bland, but my kids like soy sauce so it's kind of like little crispy soy sauce lumps when fried, LOL. I stiry fry them first in the hot oil, remove them to one side, do the veg then stir them back in, that way they are nice a crispy.

Tofu really looses it's texture and goes rubbery when you freeze it, so I wouldn't recommend it. The packages of tofu usually have a relatively long shelf life in the fridge though, so I keep a package in there most of the time for when I feel like cooking it. You can marinate it overnight too if you like.

Hope that helps?
Cheers, Julie

Oh thanks so much, that is very helpful and sounds straightforward, good to know about the fridge life too. I think cooking with tofu will be my next baby step! :)
