I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Simple Days #2

Doing: Spring cleaning the kitchen: scrubbing the exhaust fan filters, cleaning the microwave and the oven - the latter with a paste made from lemon juice and rock salt - wiping down the cupboards and skirting boards etc etc etc. Boring work, but it's so much nicer to cook in a lovely clean kitchen.

In the Garden: Planting out my newly-acquired cardamon plant.

...Harvesting the first handful of snow peas.

...Noticing that there's potato action in the cages!

Making: Ginger beer. This is my first batch made solely with my homegrown ginger, and WOW! The taste is amazing; so fresh and zingy! I can't wait for it to ferment so I can taste it all icy cold and bubbly :-)

Baking: Bagels to put in the freezer for the weekend.

Dinner: Local biodynamic chicken sausages, with homemade seasoned potato wedges and garden salad.

Contemplating: How my local op-shops are getting more expensive lately. I like buy second hand because reusing goods is great for the environment, and I also like to support my local St. Vinnies and Salvation Army charities. But these days it costs only 19c more to buy a stoppered bottle brand new from the stupormarket, as I discovered yesterday; I know where I would rather my money went, but I have to wonder if they will still continue to make money for their charities when that is the case? I can only assume that the rising cost of fuel is behind it since the stores are staffed by volunteers?

The first snow peas like the first tomatoes of the season, always seem the tastiest to me.

Oh ginger beer! I have been looking for a good one for ages. Holidays are about to start here for two weeks - I think this will be another good project.

I have a newly acquire cardamom plant as well! It's growing amazingly well on my desk indoors, actually. But I haven't researched what to do with it yet - have you??

Hi Tracy,
They are so sweet and crisp aren't they? My kids virtually inhaled them and then practically cried when there weren't any more, LOL.

Hi Sarah,
Mmmm, we love ginger beer around here, so refreshing :-) Have fun!

Hi Melinda,
Um, nope I hadn't gotten that far either with my cardamom, LOL. Most of what I have read so far implies that it probably won't produce pods this far south, so I'll wait and see if it flowers first and then worry about how to harvest the pods I think :-) Good luck with yours, I think it would make a really pretty indoor plant, if nothing else!

Hi Rachel,
It's taken me a couple of years to get to this point where I *can* make a lot of stuff, but I still feel like there's so much to learn so I keep plodding along, trying to add new skills to my repertoire each month :-)

Hi Phil,
Thanks! I'm off to check out your blog now :-)

Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, I do read as often as I can but rarely comment. You are doing some wonderful things in your home. I love the photos of your tiny seedlings emerging and the photos of your lemons in various guises.

I have metres of vanilla orchid growing here so if the ebay one doesn't work out, let me know. The ginger beer looks wonderful too.

I hope you are all well and happy.
love Rhonda

Oh, thank you so much Rhonda (both for the compliments and the offer of the vanilla vine)! We seem to have escaped the worst of the winter lergies here - touch wood - and are all going pretty well, thanks for asking :-)

Cheers, Julie
