Woo hoo! I ordered a preserving utensil set last week to use with the Vacola unit, so now I'm all set to do a test drive - just got to find something to try it out with!
... Checking out our latest electricity bill (not as bad as I though it would be after a very cold winter, phew!) and changing our bill to our electricity companies newly introduced BPay View (i.e. an electronic invoice). Only two of the companies we deal with send electronic invoices unfortunately, I wish it were more. Such a waste of paper!
Making: Yoghurt. Pikelets (with jam ;-) for afternoon tea.

In the Garden: ... Thinning carrot seedlings (i.e. lots of squatting: oh, my aching legs!). Weeding. Planting out Golden Squash and Green Sprouting Broccoli seedlings. Potting on Luffa, Butternut Pumpkin and Golden Squash seedlings.
Dinner: White bean patties served with Pesto Tabouli. I substituted parsley for the basil (since my basil isn't growing yet), almonds for the walnuts, and added chickpeas.

Contemplating: Whether to get the dishwasher fixed. We normally hand wash the dishes (to save water and energy), so it doesn't unduly worry me that the pump has gone in the dishwasher from that point of view. I also have a feeling that it's going to be expensive to fix, but if I don't fix it I worry that the seals and things will perish if it isn't being run once in a while?

Hi Julie
Been doing some catch up reading and wanted to make a comment on curly knotty hair. Speaking from experience...
Do be careful with the lemon juice I used it in my teens as I know it is great for many people but even diluted it left me with open sores on my scalp.
Over the years I have used every product good bad and evil to try and tame my mop of red frizzy curls and this year have discovered an organic Almond and Hemp oil (called the Good Oil), I buy it from a local farmers market but I believe they have a web site. I know longer use any chemical in my hair and it curls without frizz, also great as a moisturiser.
I do feel for you and your girls and hope you can find a gentle natural solution.
By the way love your blog and all the yummy recipes etc.
Clare
Hi Julie
Regarding the dishwasher - you could always remove it and put in a cupboard to house your wonderful bottles of preserves ;)
We don't own a dishwasher or a clothes drier and are perfectly happy not to. We renovated the kitchen last year and gave up the opportunity to install a dishwasher in favour of more cupboard space.
Besides, we have a deal in our house - I cook and my man washes the dishes! SO, why would I possibly need a machine?? (OK, I do wash them occasionally :))
Jokes aside, it was a conscious decision on our part NOT to install one, as we figured it was just as easy to wash by hand, we'd most likely save water and electricity and we were being less consumerist in remaining dishwasher free. xx
Hi Clare,
Oh excellent, thanks for the hemp oil tip, I'll definitely have a look for it. I have dead straight hair myself so I've never had to deal with curls before, I'm finding it quite stressful, so I'll have a go at anything chemical-free that works :-)
Hi NW,
Don't laugh but I seriously considered doing exactly that! I've got all these bottles and things I'm trying to find room for in my kitchen and the silly dishwasher is taking up perfectly good storage space ;-) If it were working at least I could sell it though, which could pay for the new cupboard...

Hi Julie, Melinda over at One Green Generation posted recently, reviewing dishwashing vs handwashing research. We don't have one, and probably won't b/c our washing up is very water-conscious, but I was suprised at how water and energy efficient newer DWs can be. It was an interesting post - food for thought.
I'm really enjoying your Simple Days posts - thankyou for the time you put into them!
Hi Em,
Yes I read Melinda's post with interest! My dishwasher is 8 years old so I suspect its not terribly efficient (I can't find any information on it anywhere). I'm sure I must use less water than it though, and even if I don't I'm not using any electricity and only a small amount of gas for the hot water.
Besides that, we always seem to have hand washing to do anyway since I don't put in my wooden-handled knives and my big mixing bowls won't fit in the dishwasher, so I might as well do it all at once LOL.
Cheers, Julie
