I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

A Pause in Proceedings...

Doing: ...Putting myself back on my thyroid medication. I woke up this morning with hand tremors and blurry vision so you can imagine the trouble I am having with the computer. I can't see and I can't type LOL. Hence I will be having a little blogging break, unless I have some cool photos I want to share and they don't need any explanatory labels to go with them :-) Maybe I should do a "Wordless Wednesday" or "A Photo A Day" type of daily theme until I feel better? Hmmm.

Anyway, I will take myself off for a blood test tomorrow (my doctor gives me spare blood test forms for 'just-in-case') and see what happens from there. In the meantime, DH has been beavering away on new vegie beds again today, which has effectively doubled our vegie space! Unfortunately, none of them receive as much sun as the main beds do, so we shall see how they go. Here he has added another bed to the bottom of the slope:

We will be paving in between the beds with old house bricks once they have been filled with soil. The lower, dog-leg bed below will be in part shade for the most of the day, so I will be planting it up with my sub-tropical ginger relatives - ginger, turmeric, galagal, cardamon - and hoping that they do OK.

It might also be OK for some loose leaf lettuce, and will certainly be suitable for shade-loving herbs like mint, so it will be useful in any event. Less lawn to mow anyway, and that's a definite plus - although we've had several complaints from the girls over the last couple of days! Never mind, now there will be more cherry tomatoes to help themselves to so they'll get used to it :-)

Good Luck,

Hope they manage to work out what is going wrong reasonably quickly.

Wonderful new beds. You are gonna be a Tour De Force this summer.

Best Wishes
Belinda

Take care of yourself.

Don't worry too much about the new beds not getting enough sun. They might not produce optimum crops, but they'll still produce something. A little shade isn't such a bad thing over summer, in my experience. Could be a great spot for strawberries.

Hi Belinda,
Thanks, and I hope so too...

Hi L,
Thanks mate, I've emailed you :-)

Hi Kate,
Thank you. I wondered that about the strawberries, it's good to know that they can take a bit of shade, thanks.

Hi Emma,
You know how it is with kids, we don't get much of a rest do we? I'll try though LOL.

Hi Kez,
Thanks mate :-)

Hi Gavin,
Thanks!

Hi Jacqui,
Thank you :-)

Hi Leanne,
No, slowing down is *tough*!

Hi Daisymum,
No actually I think the bed will get even less sun in winter when the sun is lower in the sky - but the gingers could still do OK I think? We'll see anyway.

Hi Julia,
I hope your meds get sorted out quickly, you're right that yo yo is awful. All the best for your recovery :-)

Hi Hannah,
Thanks mate :-)

Cheers, Julie

Hey Julie, hope you're feeling better quickly!

My daughter loves the Broad Ripple Yellow Currant tomatoes, they're tiny little golden ones and grow millions on a single bush. The last time we grew them she would take a large container full to school once a week so the kids could all share them!

After not having a garden last year we have several seedlings of the Broad Ripple Yellow Currant growing again. Yay!

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you, and I hope you are managing your thyroid well :-)

Hi Melinda,
Yummo, they sound delish. I can't get a look-in with our cherry tomatoes, between the three kids and the two dogs! I'm going to have to net them to keep the dogs away this year I think, how ridiculous LOL.

Cheers, Julie
