Public Holiday Monday

After all the excitement in the garden over the weekend, I didn't think much else was going to happen today when we got up and were greeted with this:

It persisted for most of the morning, although I was happy that my rainwater tanks were filling again. During the week, I didn't realise that the tap on the bottom of the tank wasn't working properly and hadn't turned off completely when I shut it off (it's a lever-style tap, not the usual type). It was hooked up to a weeper hose and continued to weep for the next couple of days, draining half of the tank! I was not a happy camper, but it sounds almost full again now :-)

Anyway, DH set up up his workshop in the garage sawing and cutting all morning. When the rain eventually subsided, he spent the rest of the afternoon hammering, swearing, and bleeding a bit, to produce these:

Great stuff. He used about half of the timber, so - weather-providing - tomorrow he's going to punt in another bed at the bottom of the slope in front of the others, and another two or three beds around further beside the clothesline. Yay!

Meanwhile, I pottered inside - away from the swearing and flying wood chips - and did some sewing. I finally got around to making three water bottle tote bags for my girls:

Despite sewing a round piece of fabric to a straight piece of fabric providing me with some challenges (!), I think they turned out rather well :-)

I was on a roll then and since I had the fabric stash out already, I turned my hand to a skirt. I have had the Oliver and S Lazy Days skirt bookmarked for weeks, but looking for the link I found another skirt tutorial I had bookmarked, a ruffle skirt, so I had a go at that instead:

I've never done gathering before, but it seemed pretty straight forward in the instructions, and fortunately it didn't give me any grief despite my paranoia that I'd break the cotton. LOL.

I just SO wish I had an overlocker, it would make life so much quicker and easier for these types of things. I've been looking for an easy-to-use second-hand one for probably six months now with no success. I've found a few but they've either been industrial models or without instruction manuals (and you can't get one for that model on the 'net or at the dealer). I noticed on in the latest Spotlight catalogue on special ($200 off, almost half price), and DH has been at me all weekend to go and look at it so I think I will tomorrow. He reasons that a new one will not only come with a guarantee, but also with lessons and that's an important consideration for someone who has never used one! Can't hurt to look anyway.

Hasn't the rain been nice! Although could've done without the wind :(

Love the raised beds - want to send him around here next?! :)

Well done on your handiwork! Very nice!

Argh, it's blowing an absolute gale here now Kez. It only started a while ago, but if it keeps up like this I'm worried that the pile of garden soil on our front lawn will blow away tonight!!

Oh!! LOVE those new garden beds :)

Feel free to send the rain north when your tank is full, we could really do with it up here!

I don't know which I like best, the beds, the totes or the skirt! Fantastic work all around.

I wish it would rain here, we have regularly been hitting 30 degree days and high humidity but no storms or rain.

I was sure it would rain last night after all I washed the car, the water tanker arrived with our $100 worth of water to top up the tanks, and I hung three quilts I had washed on the line, off to do a rain dance to day becasue that is the only other thing I can think of other than pulling a wiper blade off the car.

IT is such a shame you don't live a bit closer there is someone in my patchwork group who has a great overlocker that she wants to re home. it would be perfect for you and the instruciton book and everything else is with it.

I love the drink bottle carriers you made for the girls. You're doing so well with your sewing and I'm envious. I've a sewing machine of my grandmothers that I'd love to get out to try and make some curtains and perhaps you've inspired me to do just that! Thanks and yes, the rain has been lovely. Glad to hear you tank's full again.

I also love, love, love the drink bottle carriers you made for the girls. Make me one :P

And your garden beds look awesome! I'm about to convert some more lawn to beds for native plants (i don't want anymore vegie space right now). Soon i won't have to mow!

Ask a lot of questions before buying a machine from Spotlight. I know our local spotlight doesn't give lessons, in fact I've had problems finding someone who knew more about the machines than I did, and I'd never sewn on that model before! IMO (from having worked in a sewing shop) you are better off buying from a specialised dealer and paying a little more.

When you buy one, spend the extra and get differential feed. It makes a world of difference to your overlocking, the results are a lot better and it's much easier for you. Buying a cheaper machine tends to not save you money in the long run with overlockers and sewing machines.

I love those new garden beds too, will have to show my hubby the pictures, maybe he will be inspired. Next time you gather something you could try a trick I used to use, which was to wind some shirring elastic on the bobbin and then sew with a gathering stitch the part I wanted gathered, the elastic gathered it up as it sewed and you don't have to worry about breaking the cotton.
take care

Hi Jaki,
Thanks, I am pretty impressed with my DH :-) I'd send you some rain if I could LOL.

Hi Cat,
Yes I gather it's been hot but dry up your way, I hope that's not a sign of the summer to come :-(

Hi Daisymum,
LOL - you'd think after doing all those things you would have gotten at least SOME rain! What a shame (for me) about the overlocker your friend has, if we lived a bit closer I'd be there in a flash LOL.

Hi Bron,
Good luck with your curtains! I reckon they would be a pretty straight forward bit of sewing to start with? Have fun anyway :-)

Hi Nicole,
Thank you :-)

Hi Clare,
Thanks :-) I think the way we are going it won't be long before we have no more lawn either - what an excellent goal!

Hi Melinda,
Terrific, thank you for the tips. I wondered what differential feed was for, so now I know :-) And you're right about cheaper machines, I didn't end up going to Spotlight in the end as I would like to support a smaller local business and (in theory) set up a relationship with them. I just have to find one now.

Hi Pip,
Oh, what an excellent tip, thank you! I actually bought some elastic thread the other day too, as I want to have a go at shirring, and that makes perfect sense to use it for gathering. It would be heaps quicker too :-)

Cheers, Julie
