I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Taking it easy... making lists.

Doing: One of the side effects of Graves' Disease is simultaneously feeling physically fatigued (even though you might have done nothing of consequence), whilst having your brain racing at a million miles an hour. 'Frustrating' would be an understatement.

I'm a big fan of writing lists - even more so since Grave's Disease also made me a bit forgetful! - and Busy Woman recently posted about using her time spent waiting at the doctor's office to add things to her 'sustainability' list. Inspired, I figured that since list-making requires nothing more than a pen, paper and (preferably) a nice cup of tea, I might as well do something constructive and expand/ collate my simple/green living to-do lists whilst I am supposed to be taking it easy.

Hmmm, those lists are getting looooong! No rest for the wicked and all that. Still, I like having a loose plan to work with. Although I might not ever gain all the skills I've listed, nor acquire all the items I think I might need, at least I feel like I am being constructive instead of just drifting through life working hard to buy 'stuff' and a bigger house to put it all in.

In The Garden:

I was just sitting down with a cuppa this morning when I hear, "Mum! Mum! MUM! Come quickly! Come on!!" from the garden, in the tone of voice that suggests the child involved has found an abandoned kitten or something. I raced out, to be presented with this:

The first ripe, red strawberry of the season from Miss Five's strawberry patch (not that she does much to look after it LOL). Apparently it was very tasty ;-)

Reading: After ages spent scouring second-hand bookshops and eBay for a reasonably-priced copy of this book (for some reason they seem to sell on eBay for more than it would cost to buy it brand new!) I finally snaffled one in almost-perfect condition! Yay.

I hope to put it to good use this growing season, and start saving my own seeds from my spring and summer crops :-)

Ahh the beginning of new season harvest.

I have to admit I keep meaning to start that list... My personal worry is that once completed it will fall of the table and maim me or something.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Kids are funny aren't they, my daughter (now 14) took over a section of my vege patch a couple of years ago and filled it with an eclectic mix of things - strawberries, gerberas, lavender and lambs ears - and then promptly abandoned it. Everything has gone now apart from a lavender plant that's bigger than she is.

Glad to see you a bit chirpier today.

Hi Belinda,
*LOL* Did you note the size of the notebook I am writing my lists in? Sigh.

Hi Jacqui,
I will let you know when I'm finished it :-) Here is a website I have bookmarked with heaps of yummy-looking cracker recipes. The only one I have made so far is the soda crackers (i.e. plain ones) but I'm pretty keen to try out some of the others, they look very tempting!

Hi greenfumb,
Yep, kids can be quite funny. She mysteriously disappears when I ask for some help weeding or watering, but come fruiting time, they are all hers! LOL.

I have just replied to your apology to me - I am so so sorry I didn't realise my comment was so weird - it was not my intention at all to upset you or ruin your day. I will never post when i am exhausted and my comments don't really say what i mean them to say again.

Please please forgive me.

I know a little bit how you feel. I had my gallbladder out almost two weeks ago and now that my tummy isn't hurting anymore I want to DO things.... but then I find myself dizzy and wobbly....and sooo tired. It is frustrating not being able to do what you are used to.
The seed savers book is one on my "to get" list too. I save some seeds already, but not enough.
I hope your treatment helps you to feel better soon.
lv,
Joy

Hi Daisymum,
It's all good! I've emailed you again :-)

Hi Joy,
Ergh, I had my gall bladder removed about 10 years ago but I still remember how I felt afterwards. I ws told before hand I would be in hospital for one days and be back at work after two, but I ended up pleading to be let out after three days and even after an extra week off I was still tired and not-right. I feel for you! I hope you feel better soon.

Cheers, Julie.

That book looks fantastic, when you collect seeds do you dry them in the sun before storing them? I love your posts, always so informative and interesting. Strawberry looks fantastic, I have tried strawberry plants, but our hot summers always seem to kill them off, thought I might try some n the backyard this time, away from the hot easterlies we get here in Perth!!

When i save seeds i let them dry out on the plant. I don't know if this makes a difference, but it means they don't blow away (as long as they're not wind blown seeds) and i know where they are :)

Hi Jill,
As Clare said, the book mostly recommends to leave the pods on the bush to dry, otherwise dry them in the shade I think so that they don't go too crispy.

Hi Clare,
LOL that makes a lot of sense to me :-) Thanks!

Cheers, Julie
