5%? You're kidding, right?

One word sums up my response to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's announcement on Monday of a paltry 5% reduction in emissions by 2020: Disgust. The Garnaut report on climate change commissioned by Rudd himself recommended a 25% reduction by 2020! I still can't compose a reasonable post about it as I get too cranky.

If you feel as appalled as I do, visit the ACF's website page about it here, and follow one or more of their recommendations, such as calling your local MP or writing to your local newspaper.

I've already emailed my local MP (Labor minister Sharon Grierson) letting her know my disappointment, and I have drafted snail mail letters to the Minister for Climate Change, Senator Penny Wong and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

What an enormous environmental disappointment this government is turning out to be :-(

Yes I agree. I voted for "Kevin Howard" thinking that he was real about wanting to do something. Guess he was all talk too. 5% is just laughable.

And it makes me want to scream everytime I hear the media going on about how much the carbon trading scheme is going to "cost" us - um, hello, isn't the idea that we use LESS of everything - then it won't cost us as much??!!

I was aghast when I heard the news report. Disturbing to think that the Aussie govt cares so little about preserving it's clean-air country. I mean, individually, Aussies are worse polluters than even Americans! It's just less obvious due to the minimal population. It's just...a terrible shame.

I have to admit to doing a lot of heavy breathing this week in the wake of these decisions. The cynical, the economy will come first no matter what part of me really wanted to get proven wrong.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Hi Kez,
LOL at "Kevin Howard", it's about right unfortunately. At least they've just scrapped the income limit of solar power rebates, but they've done nothing else of consequence since ratifying the Kyoto Porotocol! And yep - I also want to scream everytime to he media beats up the emissions trading scheme 'costing' us money. Argh!

Hi Kelly,
I agree, we are the worst polluters in the world per head of population, so the attitude ofthe government just stinks...

Hi Belinda,
I know what you mean - I was hoping that the new "Labor"
government was going to be about social justice over economic growth... but NOPE. :-(

Cheers, Julie

It's appalling. I'm so upset about this. Sadly not surprising though. I've already sent my opinions through loud and clear.
