Homemade French Onion Soup Mix

Packets of dried French Onion Soup mix seem to feature prominantly in my favourite crockpot recipes, but of course the commercial product contains lots of artificial additivies I'd rather not have my family consuming - colours, flavour enhancers, preservatives and so forth. So I experimented with some substitute recipes, and here is my favorite.

French Onion Soup Mix

8 tsp dried onion flakes
4 tsp beef stock powder (I use a vegetarian "beef-style" stock with no additives)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp celery salt
pinch sugar
pinch white pepper

* Mix ingredients together thoroughly and store in an airtight container or foil package. Keeps for up to 6 months. It is the equivalent of 1 packet of soup mix.

That's brilliant - I have a secret, guilty lust for french onion soup, but I know that packet stuff is nasty. I am going to try this out this very week.

how much water do you use

Hi Anonymous,
Honestly, I've no idea as I always use it dry in recipe mixes, rather than as a soup. Since it is the equivalent of a packet you would add the same amount of water, which is generally around 2 cups? Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

Oh wow, thanks for this..
a question though, do you use commercial onion flakes and powder. We are thinking of buying a food dehydrator in the near future and I have seen where you can dry out chopped onions (for flakes?) and even crush the dried onion to make a powder. Sounds like a way to preserve all our excess onions as a lot of the onions I use are in dishes that dried onions would work in.

Hi Norma,
YES, home dried onions would be awesome in it! Much nicer than bought ones :-)

Wow - thanks so much for figuring this one out and then sharing - I just got my first crock pot, and while I am all for quick and easy, I really hate giving my family or myself the junk that is in those packets of mix - especially when I have all of the ingrediants you listed sitting in my cupboard and it's nothing to toss them in with everything else! So many thank you's from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA!!
