Doing: ... Being a very slack blogger this week! I really don't know why my daughters' school decides to leave everything until the last week of term (and a 4-day week at that), but I've been flat out this week with athletics carnivals, parent-teacher interviews, holy week services, end-of-term assemblies and the like! Ah well, the reward is that we are heading off tomorrow to my parent's house for a well-deserved break for all of us :-)
... As we will be away, I am packing up the wooden Easter eggs my father-in-law made for me to use in our Easter egg hunt. I painted many of them but didn't get the chance to finish them all off unfortunately! They all have a base coat of paint at least LOL. Next year's job is to finish the details and coat them in varnish.
Making: ... Finishing off a notebook and pencil holder for my niece's seventeenth birthday.
It's nice to be making something in more sophisticated colours than the usual little-girl pinks ;-)
Instead of the usual ribbon tie I used a button from my stash (i.e. all the spare buttons which came with new garments that I've saved over the years) and made a fabric loop.
I've wrapped it up with a visual arts diary (with 'Back to Nature' written on the cover) and a cardboard roll of lovely natural timber pencils, and I popped some hand made paper cards (sadly, not made by me LOL) inside the notebook holder. I think it turned out quite nicely; I'm half tempted to keep it for myself ;-)
In The Garden: ... Observing that my very first luffa flower has finally appeared. I doubt I'll get any fruit off it this late in the season, but I am definitely going to have to plant them somewhere else next season if I want to harvest any obviously.
It's growing on the same trellis as my bougainvillea, which is the pink flower in the foreground :-)
Reading: ... I've taken on (paid) baby-sitting for a friend on an on-call basis (she's a casual teacher) and although I rarely give in to impulses when shopping (I always go armed with list these days), when I saw it I couldn't resist splurging this week's pocket-money on an early Mother's Day present for myself:
It's sensational! It's full of all those wonderful old-time recipes that the CWA is famous for, not to mention some other interesting tidbits like what they used to make soap with (kerosene and caustic soda, anyone?!).
Contemplating: ... Which recipe I am going to cook first. Tomato jelly perhaps, while the tomatoes are still in season?
Happy Easter to you all. I'll be back in a week or so ;-)

Happy Easter. Hope you have a lovely and safe Easter break.
I love that note book and pencil holder - can see why you are tempted to keep it for yourself!
Have a great easter holiday!
Cheers,
Tricia
Have a great Easter! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE both your easter eggs and that notebook holder! Well done.
Love the eggs! They'd look great
as a table decoration (assuming
the kids find them all!).
oh the eggs are just beautiful! Thankyou for the idea... if I can find some eggs bought or someone to make them for us, I think we might borrow your idea for next year!
Quick q - do you incorporate choc eggs into your Easter at all? How do you run the hunt etc.
With thanks
Kristy
what a gorgeous book. Did u buy that from the book store... Love it... Happy Easter
Donna.
My MIL used to make an unusual and delicious tomato jelly. I'd definitely recommend a try. If it's not too sweet it goes nicely with savory dishes.
Have a lovely Easter! Relax and enjoy!
Hi ladies, thanks! I hope you all had a lovely break too :-)
Kristy,
Yes we had chocolate - my parents and in-laws buy the kids chocolate and I don't like to push my ethics onto them too strongly. We had a couple of packets of small solid choc eggs which we included in the hunt, but I have just bought some egg moulds on sale and next year I will make our own choc eggs from Fairtrade chocolate, and include them in the hunt as well.
My kids are still pretty young, so at the moment the hunt just consists of me hiding the eggs in amongst the garden - when they have collected them all we lay them all out and have a prize box and I make sure everyone gets an even number of prizes (books etc) for the most pink eggs, the most striped eggs etc.
Donna,
Yes, I bought the CWA cookbook at a local bookstore.
Cheers, Julie
