Book Giveaway

********** Comments Now Closed **********

Kez was the recipient of a 'Pay it Forward' book giveaway, and was kind enough to pass on The Good Life book to me to read when she finished it.

So in the spirit of passing it on, I am having a Giveaway of two books: The Good Life, by Scott and Helen Nearing, and In Praise of Slow by Carl Honore.

The Good Life is written by a couple who lived as self-sufficiently as possible for many years, and details their lives on two different properties. Although I found the writing style a bit dry at times (and sometimes a little pompous), the content is still very interesting.

In Praise of Slow takes a look at the international Slow Movement, and how to slow down not only with the food we eat, but in other areas of our lives as well. Worth the read. I should add however, that this books has been well-loved - the spine and all pages are intact but it is heavily creased and well-thumbed! I bought it like that so not all the damage is mine LOL.

If you are interested in receiving either of these books, leave me a comment stating which one you'd like (or that you don't mind either book) and I'll put you in the draw. International readers are welcome too :-)

Comments will close on Wednesday p.m. and I'll announce the recipients on Thursday.

Hi - I've read The Good Life and agree with all your sentiments. It is interesting because they are both so strict in their views (ie - no livestock!) but still a classic in that vein. I would love to win either book...I am in Canada though the pony express should get through.

I'd love to recieve either book.
I've just tried making the bread from your last post and I couldn't get it to rise.Any ideas? I didn't use a breadmaker, just mixed it up and kneaded it by hand. The flour may have been a bit coarse(I just got a hand grinder and have been trying it out on stuff). Also was I supposed to mix the yeast up with water first? the packet didn't say so I just put it strait in.
Its been in the oven for 50mins and is just about done, tastes pretty good though.
Thanks

I've been a follower of the slow movement for a number of years with great results both in a personal sense and a culinary one.. so would love to be in your draw for 'In Praise of Slow'. Ta.

Hi guys, you are all duly noted :-)

Black Rat - It's always a good idea to mix the yeast with warm water first and let it sit to see if it bubbles, that way you know if the yeast is still OK. If it's getting a little old the bread won't rise as much, could that be an issue? French bread is also pretty light and fluffy so I wonder if the coarser flour didn't help either. Still, as long as it tastes good :-)

Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie

I would love to win 'In Praise of Slow'.

My husband and I are trying to live more sustainably, taking it one step at a time. To help him with his diabetes, we are focusing on our diet and food shopping habits as the first step.

Thanks, Deb

Thanks Julie, The yeast is most likly very old, I used the remainder of a packet that could have been opened a year ago.
I live in Victoria, by the way.

Hi Julie,
I enjoy your blog. Haven't commented before, but I am a book fiend and building a survivalist and sustainability reference library...so your kind offer drove me out of the lurkosphere. I really like the look of the Good Life book.
All the best,
Rachael

I can thoroughly recommend the Slow Movement book, it really is a thought-provoking read and I often go back and re-read sections. Just a comment from a lurker, no need to put my name in draw.

karmakaytlyn 24/5/09 8:07 AM

I have read the Helen and Scot Nearing book and can say that they have had a great influence on many lives here in Vermont and elsewhere I am sure. I have heard little of the slow movement and would be very interested to read more about it. Thanks so much for the opportunity!

Hi Julie :) I'd really like to win the Good Life for my daughter because she is seriously wanting to learn to do this kind of thing, and I encourage her strongly to live off the land or find a way to do it! How cool is that?!

Mariana 24/5/09 2:12 PM

Count me in for "in praise of slow" thank you Julie. Cooking aside, I am particularly curious to read about learning how to 'slow' down in other areas.

Can't wait to read it!
