Lately, some of my mushrooms seemed a little deformed on top.
I thought perhaps my kids were poking them...
...until I saw this one:

A bite!
Looks like we have a mouse dining on my mushies.
Naughty Mr. Mouse. I might have to find an old sheet and net them I think.

Arrgh! how frustrating when they actually eat what you are growing! I though them eating my compost cast off's was bad enough. Good luck keeping them off/out.
I'm not sure if your Into trapping live or not, beside the issues with that I have a way to stop the mice.
You can use instant mashed potatoes on a plate scattered around your garden. The plate serves as a way of holding the potatoes and to see if the mice have vistited your treat.
This trick was given to me by a old organic gardener.
Julie I have two of the best mousers in Perth I'm sure :) They are also good friends with the two Siamese next door and that keeps us mousey free!
Are you using a mushroom kit Julie?
Hi Tammy,
Yep, it is frustrating! I suppose in winter they are looking for an easy meal, so I have to make it a little harder for them LOL.
Hi anonymous,
Great tip, thanks. I think it's probably just the one mouse so I'll cover the mushrooms and leave it at that (as they aren't inside the house).
Hi Crone,
Yes, sadly my cat is old and bored with chasing! He looked *very* distainfully at the last mouse we had in the house and wandered off in the opposite direction for a sleep! Slacker ;-)
Hi anonymous,
No, I'm using an old mushroom compost tray from a mushroom company which Tricia (Little Eco Footprints) bought for me - once the initial flush of mushrooms dies off they aren't commercially viable any more so they sell them off and we can enjoy the remainders!
Would you like a loan of my Jack Russell? She loves meeces to pieces!
Just a FYI only use the tip in the spring - early fall outsde you don't want the mice to expire inside your home.
Good luck
Julie,
I'm the Anon with the tip. I'm commenting on your assumption of the one mouse theory. I found out when my Main Coon passed just how well he kept the mouse population down. Within a month or two of a hard freeze they were inside. My two indoor cats were spending days and nights staring at my stove this went on for weeks without a break. The mice were attempting to eat the cats dry food and my two males took it personally. :~€>
I started live trapping an relocating outdoors. After catching 20 I started using snap traps. Then using a expanding foam and steel wool. They can squeeze into the smallest hole, so every little spot was filled.
If you see one I'll bet you have several within months that will explode.

Hi Mariana,
Ha ha! We had a Jack Russell for many years growing up and we certainly didn't have any mice troubles. Our two dogs are far more interested in birds than mice sadly (a side effect of having gun dogs obviously!)
Hi Anon #1,
Yes, nothing worse then dead mice in the walls or ceiling, they smell unbelievably bad.
Hi Anon #2,
Yes you are probably right. The first place I check for mice are my compost heaps and I haven't seen any, hence my assumption that there is only one at the moment - but there won't be for long if they find a food supply!
Cheers, Julie
Slugs have been getting mine ;-(
They seemed to ignore my slug trap for a few days - but i'm now catching a few every day. So now that i'm on top of the slugs - i hope I don't get mice! We have had trouble controlling the mice in our cook pen/compost in the past.
