I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Independence Days Update

It's Monday so it must be time for an Independence Days update.

Read more about why I am participating in Sharon's Independence Days Challenge, here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Planted something - Cabbages, cauliflowers, and picked up another two mushroom compost trays from Tricia.
Harvested something - Sprouts, mustard greens, rocket, thyme, lettuce, parsley, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, starfruit, lemons, two oranges and the first sugar snap peas of the season.
Preserved something - Three jars of lemon butter and three bottles of lemon cordial; made Ghee (clarified butter).
Reduced waste - Made chicken stock from the carcass of Sunday's roast (free range) chicken and the leafy tops off a bunch of celery; Made dog food using up all the limp vegies in the bottom of the crisper and some out-of-date quinoa; Made ghee instead of buying it; Made more laundry powder, playdough and honey facial cleanser.
Preparation and Storage - Op-shopping produced another glass preserving jar to replace one more plastic container in the kitchen, and a sheer white curtain to cover the cabbage and cauliflower seedlings with to protect them from white cabbage moths; Did a big stockpile grocery shop to replace goods going out of date.
Eat the Food - Made chicken stock from a roasted chicken carcass; Trialled a new bread recipe with burghul wheat in it to use up the almost-out-of-date burghul (very nice); Substituted red mustard leaves for spinach in a curry which worked out well.
Building Community - Featured in a gardening column in a local newspaper on Saturday.
Learned a New Skill - Made ghee (clarified butter) for the first time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So much to do, so little time! I need to get more organised so I might start a little notebook divided into sections to jot down all my aims for each division, that way I may actually get some of them done LOL.

That lemon butter looks nice Julie ;-)

Honey cleanser – I’m definitely going to give that a go. I’m also going to try making a few clensers and moisturisers with bees wax – as my Dad just asked if I would like a bucket of used bees wax. Would I ever! I have found all sorts of great moisturiser recipes with bees wax in them. Have you ever used it?

Cheers,
Tricia

I've got to have a go at the lemon cordial.

That's something we go through a bit of in our house.

Hi Tricia,
LOL, I have one bottle put aside for Mr Eco ;-) I've never used bees wax because it's expensive to buy but I've seen (and contemplated) some gorgeous-looking recipes using bees wax, not to mention candles of course. I want to make my own lip balm when I use up my last two chap sticks, I bought an empty wind-up stick from Aussie Soap Supplies recently when I bought my last order of goodies.

Hi MistressB,
We plough through it in summer so I'm annoyed I missed the 2L container of juice in the freezer over summer! It's very refreshing (and very simple).

Cheers, Julie

I LOVE your independence days reports Julie- they're so chock full of inspiration. I like the idea of summing it all up weekly. I was trying to do a little from each of the categories each day (madness, I know)- but over a week it kind of happens anyway- and I feel less manic.

i love everything, anything with lemon, especially organic! thanks.

My gosh ... your fabulous! I am definitely going to try the lemon cordial. Does Ghee smell bad when making? I've heard it does.

My goodness Julie, it seems to me you are achieving a huge amount!!

Hi Patricia,
You know, it *seems* like I'm not doing much and then when I write it down it all adds up over a week - the benefits of actually recording it!

Hi Christine,
Hmmm, well I didn't notice a 'bad' smell but then I was cooking other things at the same time so perhaps I didn't notice?

Hi Christel,
Enjoy :-)

Hi Nicola,
How's things? Thanks for "dobbing" us in to Gina by the way, LOL ;-) She's really nice, isn't she? Re: the reports, as I said to Patricia, I feel like I'm hardly doing anything but when I jot it all down it is quite motivating to see how much I *did* get done over a week or so.

Cheers, Julie

Our local show is coming up at the end of June and I think I'll enter the Lemon Butter. Not sure why I bother cause I never seem to be able to win a ribbon in that section. I just posted my first entry in the preserve section, so fingers crossed for my strawberry and apple jam.

Hi TMKW,
Mmmmm, strawberry and apple jam... We barely got any strawbs this year between the dogs and slugs and them being older plants. I'm looking forward to digging them out and replanting the runners and corssing our fingers for a big harvest again this summer! Good luck with your preserves in the show :-)

Cheers, Julie

You may be surprised that the food in our pantries last longer than the expiration date. Expiration dates are to protect the manufacturer's legal backsides. They rarely have anything to do with the quality or taste of the food. Just because an expiration date has come and gone does NOT mean that your food has suddenly turned bad. http://tinyurl.com/punrwr

Hi preparednesspro,
Yes, there are many items I'm happy to use after the use by date - particularly tinned and dried goods - although I like to rotate them anyway just to be on the safe side :-)

Cheers, Julie
