Ginger & Turmeric Tea
Apart from tasting terrific, both ginger and turmeric are blessed with therapeutic health properties as well. Herb expert, Isabell Shipard writes about the benefits of turmeric here, and you can read more about the medicinal value of ginger here. Suffice it to say, that both are excellent to take in winter when our immune systems can take a battering from coughs and colds.
Since it is currently cold and wet here, but I am blessed with plenty of home grown ginger, turmeric and lemons, I have started making my own tea to help combat the nasty cold that is threatening to take hold. My favourite is a recipe from Aussie vegetarian chef, Kurma Dasa.
Kurma Dasa's Ginger and Turmeric Tea
Place two cups of water in a small saucepan, bring to the boil and add ½ teaspoon each of powdered turmeric and ginger. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Strain into a cup and stir in the juice of half a lemon and one tablespoon of maple syrup (I use raw honey). Drink warm. You can feel it doing you good!
Next up I plan to try the equally delicious-sounding recipe for lemon, ginger and garlic tea which Chris kindly posted in the comments in my ginger harvest post. Yum.

Right! That's it! My next big purchases will be a food dryer and a coffee grinder-my eyes and mind are boggling at the thought of all that homegrown home dried/ground/FRESH goodness in jars! You're so inspiring Julie-How could any cold stand a chance, I want to bring mine over right now to get the treatment :D
That has to be very good for the body. I wonder if it will work for nausea as well? I will definitely try this - but I only have fresh ginger and might just slice that up and boil. Thanks for sharing - will definitely keep this in mind during cold/flu season!
Tumeric has amazing blood cleansing properties which is fantastic for anyone who suffers boils. My daughter recently suffered with an outbreak and after two rounds of antibiotics they still small but still were appearing. The herbalist suggested tumeric and apple juice. I teaspoon of tumeric in a class of apple juice. No more boils appeared within 24 hours of this tonic and within three days they were all gone! Amazing.
Love your blog.

LOL Nicola - You are welcome any time, you can join our hankie brigade! All got the sniffles here too :-( Mmm, but that tea is gooood.
Hi Kimchi,
I think fresh ginger and honey tea would be terrific for nausea. I used to drink commercial ginger tea when I had morning sickness and it worked quite well, so I think fresh tea would be even better.
Hi Jojo,
Wow, that's impressive! I'm hoping some of that goodness is working on us at the moment with our winter ills.
Cheers, Julie
