I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Just passing through...

My apologies for the lack of posts recently guys, but to be honest I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. Despite opting out of the commercial aspects of Christmas, it's still a manic time of year with school end-of-year activities and events (school's out now though, YAY!) and personal and work catch-ups... I have managed to go days at a time where I haven't even turned the computer on to check emails (and I promise I'm not ignoring you if you are waiting for a reply, sorry).

I finished up my babysitting duties for the year yesterday and hubby has kindly taken my girls to my mother-in-law's for the day, so I have a hectic schedule of a good book and numerous cups of tea interrupted by some light gardening organised for the day ;-)

Back soon, I promise!

Hi, I have just discovered your blog and signed on to follow your updates and posts. what a lovely lot of information you have here! I live up in tropical north queensland and am just starting to grow a lot of what you are growing. Do you have a recipe for your pickled ginger posted? I saw a reference to it, but couldnt find a recipe. Last year I just left the tumeric in the ground and harvested it as I needed it through the dry, and it just came up again this year in the same spot. Is there a reason you harvest it all at once rather than leaving it in the ground? I was thinking that would be a better space saver than storing both the ginger and the tumeric.

hello Julie,

you certainly deserve a day on your own to indulge in a book. I hope your 'me' time was very pleasant and rewarding.

Cheers,
Gaye

Hi Julie, it is a crazy time of year- always so much happening. I haven't been reading blogs either- I'm having a big catch up this morning as we have a rare day at home.
Hope you enjoy some calmer days now and get a bit of a break.

Hi everyone :-)

Africanaussie - I harvest my ginger and turmeric as I live so much further south than you and it will rot in the ground over winter otherwise. It would be much easier to leave it in the ground! I pickle the ginger using a dry sherry - traditionally rice wine or mirin would be used but I don't have any and it's more expensive than cooking sherry ;-) Just cover the peeled root with the sherry and seal. Store in the fridge and eat within around 6 months (although I'm still eating mine from last year with no ill effects). Save the pickling juice to use in stir fries - delish!

Cheers, Julie
