Zucchini Flowers

A Photo A Day Challenge: Photo #54

About all I'm going to get off my zucchini's this year are the flowers - not that we mind actually, we're still eating frozen zucchini from last year! If I could be bothered, I'd hand pollinate them for better fruit set.

I started this challenge on January 5 - it is my aim to harvest at least one thing from my garden every day this year - and photograph it. If I can manage to pick 360 different varieties, then so much the better! This is 54/360.

Cheers,

I sliced the blossoms to the tops of summer salsas, salads, eggs, anything we ate if I had a couple in the house. And I loved taking pictures of them too!

Hi Julie... please elaborate. Why won't you get any fruit? I planted a few more zucchini plants after my others had been so successful in the Spring. They are quite big now and have been flowering but no sign of fruit. Are they doomed? Is it too late in the season? Thanks for the advice! xo m.

I hand-pollinated the only three fruits that flowered, and only one grew into a decent fruit. The others withered. So even hand-pollination doesn't guarantee success!

Julie, they are delish in a simple tempura batter.

Hi Kale,
Mmmm, yummy :-)

Hi Meagan,
They just aren't forming many female flowers this year and those that are, aren't being pollinated, despite lots of bees around. I think the rotten weather is influencing the lack of female flowers, have you noticed any forming on yours? If they are, you could help them along by hand pollinating, they should be good to go for another couple of months yet. If not, I know that pinching out the growing tips on pumpkin vines helps to form more female flowers, but I don't really know if this is applicable to zukes as well, as they aren't as vine-like... Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Hi Anastasia,
No unfortunately! It usually helps if you aren't getting any at all though...

Hi Rose,
Yummy, I haven't done that for ages, I think the girls would love them that way :-)

Cheers, Julie

Thanks Julie! Finally got around to coming back and looking for your reply. It's been on my mind the past couple days. I'll keep them going for a little while and see if I can find any female flowers. Thanks for the advice. xo m.
