For those not in the know, the production of palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia is threatening the habitat of orangutans and other endangered species. Palm oil is cheap to produce and is used in innumerable products - in Australia, if it has "vegetable oil" on the label, it is generally palm oil in the product.
The scorecard makes for some interesting reading, although it only assesses the biggest six companies operating in Australia - and in order to look at individual products, you'll need to know which of them owns the brand you are looking at buying! Many years ago, I owned shares in Goodman Fielders for example, and they own a staggering number of smaller food companies. Still, the scorecard is a good start.
The Aussie version is a response to the European version, available to download here.

Delicious.
I already make her deodorant and hair detangler for the girls, and today I'm making her lip balm. Next on my list to make is her hair spray and the Bugs Don't Like Me Balm, because the mozzies around here lately are unbelievable and I'm hating spraying my girls with icky, stinky, Aeroguard all the time, because, sadly, none of other the 'natural' balms I've tried are working for us & the girls are still getting bitten ferociously :-(
Cheers,

Hi Julie, I haven't made your roll-on deodorant yet...still trying to find a container. I think I will give Angry Chicken's recipe a try since I have a container I can use for that.
I did make a nice "solid" deodorant that I put in an old deodorant stick, but the coconut oil has too low of a melting temp and melts in my house in the summer. In the winter is was fine, but I got a bit of a burn under the arms after 2 weeks of use and would have to take a break. I may re-make it with a coconut oil that has a higher melting temp and try reducing the baking soda and switching to an essential oil that is less irritating and more soothing (Any suggestions? I was using tea tree).
This really is quite the process - trying to find one that works for me. But it is really worth it I think.
Thanks for the information

Thanks for the palm oil link- thats going to be very helpful.
Hi Julie, I use Vetiver oil as a mozzie repellant and find it works really well for me (I'm usually the bug magnet). Just dab some on and it really seems to keep them away, Sonya
Hi Emily,
Yes, I'm finding the same thing with the lip balm I've made which I used coconut oil in... Perhaps leave the essential oil out and see how you go? And yes, I'd reduce the baking soda content. Good luck! it is worth it for me as I'm allergic to aluminium so I can't use any of the commercial products anyway.
Hi CHFG,
No worries :-)
Hi Sonya,
Hmm, several balms I've tried have Vetiver oil in them but I've not tried it straight, so thanks!
Cheers,
Julie
