I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.

Bloggy break

Hello peeps,

I'm going to be away from my computer for a couple of weeks while we go a'holidaying away from home, so there will be a short break in transmissions.  I have had a large number of readers unsubscribe during this past month, but hopefully I can come back refreshed and offer you something more interesting to read :-)

I am really looking forward to some time spent just chillin' with my family. Maybe some knitting will be involved, some light reading is on the cards, and almost definitely there will be some beginner quilting lessons as I ply my Mum with questions ;-)

So, au revoir my friends for the moment.  In the meantime, I leave you with my quickie solution to this little mishap:

Problem: One steaming hot bowl of soup + one varnished table top = one giant heat mark + one cranky mother.  Sigh

Solution: Two stained cotton terry tea towels + two old, worn bathroom hand towels = four much more heat-absorbent placemats than the thin cotton tablecloth I usually use.

I just cut them both in half and sewed them together, trimmed the larger hand towels down to size, then turned them the right way out and top-stitched. So far they are working a treat.

Cheers for now,

Julie for the Stain try putting cooking oil on the stain and leaving it for a while then wiping. I've done this in the past and the stain goes away. We use cork placemats for our hot dishes, we justcput the picture side down, cork up. Have a good holiday :)

Have a great holiday, enjoy the non-blogging pressure! I am looking forward to your return to blogging... refreshed or not!! ;)

(I meant, enjoy the break from the pressure of feeling that you must do a blog post, that can sometimes happen!)

I've also had some minor success with this sort of damage when I was able to come by very fresh walnuts. You can rub the stain either with a piece of the cracked shell (concave side of course - you don't want to add scratches) or with a fresh, soft nutmeat. I think you can even use the fleshy "fruit" that encases the shell before it's ripe if you can get them. The walnut oil will stain the bleached wood. Chances are good that the walnut stain will not exactly match the stain on the furniture, but it will at least make the damage less obvious and add some oil to condition the wood.

Solutions found on the infamous internet.

Step 1•Dampen a washrag or cloth in warm water, and wipe away any surface dirt.

•Step 2
Massage butter or margarine into the heat mark. Leave the butter or margarine on the stain overnight, and wipe clean in the morning. The stain should disappear with the butter.

•Step 3
Mix olive oil with cigarette ashes to form a paste. Spread the paste over the stain and leave overnight. Wipe away the paste and the stain in the morning.

•Step 4
Lay a clean towel on the area. Set your clothing iron on low heat and iron in a circular motion. Continue to iron until the heat mark is gone.

•Step 5
Rub wood polish into the cleaned area with a soft cloth. All of these cleaning methods will dull the polish on the wooden furniture. Buff clean for a new shine.

Have a nice break.

Enjoy your holiday, Julie, you deserve a break ;o)
Try rubbing the stain gently with toothpaste and a soft cloth, I've been able to totally remove stains from two different tables using this method...Janette

Your "new" towels are a motivation for me to try this again.

The first time I tried sewing towels I broke so many sewing needles.

Obviously I need to try again

Hi there.. now we had a very nice wooden vanished table that had some of those pesky heat stains on thanks to kids and their hot bowls.. soooo we got a tea towel and placed it over the mark, then with an iron set on cotton, no steam - we ironed the cloth till it lifted the mark.. what your trying to do is heat the vanish so the water escapes - had I not seen this I would never have believed it... good luck with this.

Julie, I love your blog. I am off to make my homemade laundry powder. You really are an inspiration. I run classes for adults and kids and try and teach them the simplicity and enjoyment that can be gained by going back to basics. Kids make their own artwork using food colouring as paint (lasts forever) which we frame, I teach them all about the sewing machine and get them to have a go and encourage everyone attending classes to make, bake and create. I have added you to the links on my blog (more for my convenience really) and just wanted to say keep up the fantastic work... love it all!
(enjoy your break)
