I'm Julie, and I live with my husband and three young daughters in New South Wales suburbia, Australia. This is the online journal I kept until recently, of how we are trying to live more simply & sustainably in suburbia.
This blog is on indefinite hiatus but please feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably.
Chinese Water Chestnuts
A Photo A Day Challenge: Photo #111
I started this challenge on January 5. It was my aim to harvest at least one thing from my garden every day this year - and photograph it - until illness and an inability to get into the garden got in the way. If I could have managed to pick 360 different varieties, then so much the better! This is photo #111 of what is now a possible 253 photos/varieties.
Cheers,

WONDERFUL. hate to admit that I had no idea what they looked like - other than in a can. WONDERFUL! I will have to do some looking around about how to grow them. Thanks!!
I'll admit- I'm a little jealous. Perhaps it was foolish of me to try to grow water chestnuts in our cooler Victorian climate. My return for 10 months of growth and all that water was a measly 10 chestnuts. From 3 planted in at tub.
What was your yield like?
Hi Emily,
They are lovely, but I will admit, somewhat of a pain to peel lol.
Hi Joanne,
The biggest harvest I've seen was from a blogger friend who planted hers into pure composted cow manure. They *really* like fertiliser and lots of depth for their roots to run and form tubers. I used manure on mine this year (and it stunk!) but sadly they dried out a couple of times in the really hot weather which knocked them back badly. I might work out the optimum conditions finally *this* year lol.
Cheers,
Julie
