I'm Julie, and I live Australian suburbia. This blog is the online journal I kept to record my family's journey towards living more simply & sustainably.

This blog is on indefinite hiatus but feel free to look around my archives for some inspiration in your own journey to living more lightly and sustainably. Please note that Blogger has 'eaten' some of my older photos which I am unable to retrieve at the moment.

I am now blogging at Our Simple Days, if you would like to stop by.

Mwahahaha...

After blogging about those rascally birds pinching my mulberries, we got up early and beat them to it this morning!

It was raining though, so what to do with a couple of kilos of damp berries?

Why, mulberry jam of course!

I used Sally Wise's recipe from A Year in a Bottle, and it's looking pretty good so far, I must say... Good enough for smearing on bagels with labneh for breakfast tomorrow even ;-)

Cheers,

I have a young mulberry tree or two on my property, but have never had enough berries to use them.My birds beat me to them anyway. My maiden name is Wise. My ancestors came from across the big water. Does Sally have a blog I could visit?

yum!!
We planted a mulberry tree in our backyard last year; later we found out they take 15 years to start fruiting. What a wait!!

Oh to have a mulberry tree! Well I guess that is what I have to expect living in Rozelle on 288 square metres (yep that includes the house). I will happily live my mulberry tree dream through you....including the jam!

So even as you settle yourself down for a late afternoon naplet, after a scone and homemade jam, you can smirk. You didn't even need to wash 'em!

We have netted our trees after losing out to the birds last year. Why can't they share?
I might try Sally's recipe when our mulberries are ripe if there are enough to spare for jam.

Hi Julie,
I discovered your blog yesterday when someone posted a link to your post on homemade yoghurt and today I sat down and read it all from the beginning to the end.
How inspiring!! Like you, I put a hold on all my dreams of self-suffiency and minimising my own environmental damage while my babies were very young, but now that they are 3 and 2, and we have purchased our own 1/4 acre property in regional WA, I am inspired to revisit these dreams.
Thankyou for taking the time to share your journey, I have taken alot from your writing and it has given me great ideas on where and how to begin.
Nicole.

Hi Sawn,
Sorry for my very slow reply, but I don't think Sally has a blog (not that I can find anyway).

Hi Rebecca,
Fifteen years?! What variety do you have? Mine was only a couple of years old before it started producing a few little berries? The tree is only about 5 years old now and I would get about a kilo a day if it weren't for the birds.

Hi Lanie :-)
I think you do amazingly well in your tiny space, but like you, I dream of having more room for fruit trees! I reckon I might start 'guerilla" planting fruit trees around my suburb in big open spaces rofl.

Hi Tania,
Oh yes, LOL.

Hi Tracy,
Frustrating, isn't it? You'd think the birds could content themselves with the berries I can't reach at the top of the tree, but no, they have to sit on the lowest branches and feast!

Hi Nicole,
Oh how exciting for you! I'd love to have a quarter acre block, then I'd have room for planting proper fruit trees! Ah well, do have fun on your adventures, and thank you for your kind words :-)

Cheers,
Julie

Sounds yummy. Any chance you could post the recipe?

Your post on mulberry jam inspired me. We have the most gorgeous mulberry tree but I am over pies and crumbles now. I am already imagining my friend's faces when they get a jar of mulberry jam for Christmas!
